Are Port Vale heading back to League Two next season?
Port Vale fans have been waiting with growing frustration for a season-saving comeback but as yet to no avail. They have lost four of their last five games, drawing the fifth match with Stevenage who are sitting pretty in a respectable seventh position.
Currently, the Valiants are battling it out at the bottom of the table, fearing they’ll be demoted to League 2 along with Fleetwood Town, Carlisle United, and Cheltenham who sit a single place above them, but not safe from the demotion cut off.
Fans were hoping this season would see Port Vale climb up the table and even maybe reach for one of the promotion spots or play-offs but this is now far out of sight for the team. Their priority now is grabbing points to get out of the relegation zone to secure a third consecutive season in League 1.
Hopes for the team have fallen flat with both their results and overall progress but the addition of new players and a new club president offers some hope to fans for a brighter future.
Battling at the bottom
Port Vale currently sits at 22nd in League 1, dipping just into the relegation zone dangerously close to the end of the season but it’s not over yet.
There have been a few reasons for their disappointing season descent including the lacklustre performances from some of their big-name players, including but not limited to, Kofi Balmer who was expected to do great things for the club whilst on loan from Crystal Palace. Arriving from a Premier League team certainly raised the expectations on Balmer but it is undeniable that he hasn’t performed how Port Vale expected or wanted.
The Valiants have some good chances for gaining some points coming up including the match against Shrewsbury (Saturday 9th March) which is taking place at Port Vale’s own Vale Park.
However, the team may struggle with their upcoming match against Leyton Orient currently placing ninth with three wins out of their last five matches (Tuesday 12th March) away from home.
Due to this, the odds of Port Vale winning or even reaching the top 6 have skyrocketed because of the seemingly unsurmountable task in front of them and the short amount of time left in the season. It would certainly be a valiant move to place money on the Valiants as statistically, they could achieve a decent position if their form improves significantly. Celebrity Club President
Wrexham have set a high standard for celebrity owners with their addition of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney but Port Vale’s new club president aims to further increase this. Robbie Williams accepted the role of the Club President of his home team gratefully, saying that “Port Vale were always in my heart, they were, and they always will be.” which can only show the enthusiasm and love he has and will continue to bring to the club.
Robbie Williams grew up in Stoke-On-Trent so the club is certainly close to home and he has a personal connection which definitely motivated his choice to become Club President.
It’s impossible to guess the impact of Robbie’s addition to the team but it’s clear (like Wrexham) that there will be some new publicity and fans of the club and that any investments made by Robbie will go far, investing in players and so much more. Having joined the team he has brought an air of optimism to the club and re-ignited the passion not seen in the club for a while.
Hopefully, Robbie Williams can bring new energy to the team, and not only this but some extra funding where it’s needed to smooth around the edges, filling in where he can. It’s safe to say that fans are excited about this new addition to their team as well as the players. While it seems the season isn’t going to be the most successful for Port Vale, next season will be their time to shine with new investments in players and the wider club.
