Could Haaland Break Scoring Records This Season But Not Win the Premier League With City?
It would be an interesting statistic, but could Haaland break scoring records this season but not win the Premier League with City?
We are only halfway into the 2022/23 English Premier League season, and Norwegian international football player Erling Haaland who currently plays for Manchester City, has already scored 21 goals across all competitions in just 23 games.
However, despite his efforts, Manchester City are still only second in the Premier League, which begs the question, could Haaland break scoring records this season but not win the Premier League with Man City? Find out more right here.
Who is Erling Haaland?
22-year-old Erling Haaland is a men’s professional footballer who currently plays at club level for English Premier League side Manchester City and at an international level for Norway. The left-footed striker was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, in July 2000, but only spent the first three years of his life in England before being raised in Norway.
Before joining Manchester City in June 2022 for a reported fee of €60 million (£51.20 million), he played for Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund from 2020 to 2022, scoring an incredible 72 goals in just 67 appearances. Since making his international debut for Norway in 2019, he has scored 21 goals in 23 games.
The Haaland Factor and Manchester City’s Underperformance
Two things can be true that seem to oppose each other. For instance, those who look at football betting odds will notice that Haaland is by far the favourite for the Golden Boot. He is scoring for fun. When presented with a chance – and he gets plenty playing in this City team – he generally finishes it. However, Manchester City look fragile – more fragile than they’ve looked for a few years, even when Liverpool won the league. Goals win you games, but defences win you titles. Haaland’s record-breaking exploits don’t appear to be enough to clinch City the title this season.
Nonetheless, they will. In due course, he and City will have a title together. It’s just a case of how soon into next season they do it.
What are the odds of Erling Haaland being the Premier League’s top goalscorer in 2022/23?
Erling Haaland is the current odds-on favourite player to score the most Premier League goals in the current 2022/23 campaign. If you were to bet on him right now, you would be looking at odds of around 1/9.
This is the same as saying 1.11 in European decimal odds and -900 in American/moneyline odds. It’s also the same as saying he has a whopping 90.00% implied probability rate of being the top goalscorer, which means it’s a fairly safe bet.
Some of the other Premier League players who are also in the running to win the Golden Boot (the top goalscorer award) are the following players:
- Harry Kane: 7/1 (which is 8.00, or 700) with a 12.50% implied probability rate
- Aleksander Mitrovic and Ivan Toney: Both 50/1 (which is 51.00, or 5000) with only a 2.00% implied probability rate
- Marcus Rashford: 66/1 (which is 67.00, or 6600) with only a 1.50% implied probability rate
Erling Haaland is also the odds-on favourite to win the PFA Player of the Year 2022/23 award at 4.6 (-150, or 1.67) with a 60.00% chance of winning, which is ahead of Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard at 9/2 (5.50, or 450) with an 18.20% chance of winning, and Manchester City teammate Kevin De Bruyne at 8/1 (9.00, or 800), who has an 11.10% chance of winning.
Final note
Whether Haaland can be the Premier League’s top goalscorer and Manchester City don’t end up winning the league remains to be seen. We will just have to wait and see.
