Some Of The Best Football Matches In History
History has seen some incredible football matches. Check out a list of some of the greatest matches ever, without any favour given to specific countries.
The Greatest Football Matches In History
Let’s face it, there is an incredible amount of memorable football matches. So much so that choosing a list of the best ever is a near impossible task. After all, fans are generally biased to choosing matches that involve their favourite team.
With that being said here is a list of the best matches in history. There is no favour to specific teams, and no favour to specific countries. This is a list that takes the whole world into account, and is not limited by geographic borders.
Liverpool Versus Chelsea
When a pair of teams this high level goes head to head, assumptions are that fireworks are inevitable. But that isn’t always the case. In the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League Chelsea and Liverpool had already gone head to head a total of 24 times. The majority of those matches had been rather dull affairs, with both teams adopting cautions approaches.
The 2008-09 situation was different. Liverpool were backed into a corner, needing a 3 goal margin in order to progress. This meant just one thing; Liverpool had to come out guns blazing. The match ended in a 4-4 draw, but the action that led to this conclusion was anything but mundane. Goal after goal smashed into the nets, with barely a few minutes passing before another incredible play jolted fans screaming out of their seats.
Football doesn’t get much more thrilling than this. Many would say it’s rivalled only by the action that NZ sports betting provides.
West Germany Versus Hungary
Going back to 1954 and the World Cup Finals. When a match is given an official title you know it’s something special. The Miracle Of Bern saw West Germany face off against Hungary, with the results being the stuff of legend. The Hungarian team had not lost a single match in 4 years, boasting a record of 34 wins and 6 draws. The team was also home to some of the greatest players in the world at the time, including Zoltan Czibor and Nandor Hidegkuti. The Germans, on the other hand, were a team of enthusiastic, but largely amateur nobodies.
In the first 8 minutes of the match the West German team was already deflated, getting smashed down into a 2-0 nightmare situation. But, against all expectations in a match that had all the hallmarks of a Hollywood blockbuster, the Germans fought their way back and won 3-2. This is largely seen as the biggest upset in football history.
The Game Of The Century
Another match with an official name, this one is referred to as The Game Of The Century. In 1970 Italy squared off against West Germany in a FIFA World Cup Semi-Final. The match was everything every fan could have hoped for, including a nail-biting finish in which 5 goals were scored during extra time.
Astonishingly star player Franz Beckenbauer even dislocated his shoulder, only to continue playing the remainder of the match with his arm in a hastily tied scarf. The match is still incredible to this day, and certainly deserves a watch. It’s even better going in not knowing which team won.
