Manager Darrell Clarke named an unchanged side for the first time this season and Vale dominated the opening minutes of play.
A great through ball by Pett released Worrall on five minutes and his shot was deflected wide. Worrall had another chance from a long ball before the home side came back into the match.
Hippolyte shot wide, Wood shot well over and Taft forced a header from Covolan as Scunthorpe looked for the opener.
Vale pushed again and Wilson was inches away from a Gibbons cross while a Tom Conlon free-kick was well saved.
The match winning goal came in the 40th minute as good work from Conlon found Garrity who had run into the box and his finish beat the keeper to put Vale in front. It was a satisfactory end to what had been a largely scrappy first-half.
Half-time: Scunthorpe Utd 0-1 Port Vale
The home side had the first chance of the second period with Covolan producing a fine save early on. However, apart from that effort, it was all Vale pressure for the remainder of the half.
There were numerous Vale attacks as the home side struggled to put any possession together. A quick free-kick almost set up Tom Conlon while Jamie Proctor missed a great chance on 70 minutes when he was given time to bring the ball down in the box but he fired wide.
As the game entered the last ten minutes, Conlon headed off the line and Dan Jones blocked a couple of long-range efforts as the home side belatedly pushed for an equaliser. However, they were the closest that Scunthorpe came to equalising as the Valiants saw out the game to record another clean sheet.
Once again there was excellent “game management” from the Vale team and a strong all-round performance from Darrell Clarke’s side. It is now 221 minutes since the defence last conceded a goal while this win also took the Valiants’ run to three victories in a row. It was also their first League win at Scunthorpe since 1973, bringing an end to an unwelcome run of results.
