Port Vale were missing captain Tom Conlon while manager Darrell Clarke made change with Jamie Proctor coming in for James Wilson. New loan signing Dennis Politic was on the bench.
It was the visitors who had the better of the opening ten minutes with Tanner forcing Covolan into an early save. However, Vale came into the game with David Worrall denied by a good tackle and Nathan Smith hitting the bar with an overhead kick.
Tanner had another effort for the visitors before Ben Garrity headed over after good work from Proctor. There were Vale appeals for a penalty when Worrall was stopped in the box and Brad Walker had a shot blocked. However, the best chance of the half fell to Carlisle as a break saw them four on one but Abrahams’ weak effort was easily saved.
Carlisle had the first effort of the second period but Covolan saved low down. Vale then had a good chance on 55 minutes when Rodney caused problems in the box but his effort was blocked by the defender. Moments later Rodney showed fancy footwork as he danced through the defence but he couldn’t get a shot off on target.
The Valiants brought on James Wilson in the final quarter of the game and Brad Walker went close from a corner. Sub David Amoo went even closer on 80 minutes when his shot rattled the post. From the resulting corner, Smith’s effort was headed off the line.
However, despite that late pressure, Vale just could not find that killer finish and the Valiants had to settle for a share of the points at home for the second game in a row.
