John Askey: defensive naivety cost us dearly against Salford City
Port Vale manager John Askey says defensive “naivity” was at fault as his side shipped three goals against Salford City on Tuesday evening.
The Valiants were knocked out of the Football League Trophy competition after the 3-0 loss.
Speaking after the game, Askey told the media: “In the first-half we were doing okay and naivety has cost us the first goal, the ball should have been cleared.
“Then you go in 1-0 down and think, there’s quite a big slope here and you are thinking we have a chance in the second half. We had one or two chances and then again they have hit us with a set piece. We have given away a stupid free kick and you are always vulnerable against these because they go back to front and they are looking for set pieces.
“Then the third goal was just calamitous really. We left ourselves wide open when we should have been having a shot at goal.
“You are looking for players to come in and show they want to play on the Saturday. I can’t say there were too many who came in where that was the case. It’s not everybody, but one or two.”
