Just wasn’t good enough – Port Vale manager’s verdict on loss to Walsall
Port Vale manager John Askey says the team’s performance “just wasn’t good enough” after they slipped to a 1-0 home defeat to Walsall on Saturday afternoon.
The Valiants lost their unbeaten home record and had midfielder Tom Conlon sent-off for good measure as their hopes of a play-off push took a dent.
We didn’t play well enough, I think the game was there to be won…
Speaking after the match, Askey said: “We didn’t play well enough, I think the game was there to be won.
“We had a bit of a go at half-time and you think they will respond, but then we conceded from a goal that we should have defended better. We shouldn’t have allowed the cross in first of all.
“It just wasn’t good enough today.
“I know we had to make changes and had one or two people playing out of position but we have got to be better.”
In contrast Walsall manager Darrell Clarke was delighted with his side’s display. He commented: “I thought my back four were absolutely outstanding.
“The lads’ work rate from one to eleven was great, they’re giving me everything.
“But we have to be better with the ball, that’s the biggest frustration for me today.”
