Neil Aspin says new Port Vale system isn’t defensive
Port Vale manager Neil Aspin says his team’s new system isn’t defensive as it contains three forward players.
Vale have tightened up defensively after their 6-2 horror show at the hands of Lincoln. Aspin’s response was to opt for a back three of Connell Rawlinson, Nathan Smith and Leon Legge flanked by wingbacks Theo Vassell and Mitch Clark.
It’s certainly not a defensive system, we are playing with three forwards…
The formation has seen Vale go two League games without conceding although their only goal in that time has come from the penalty spot.
Aspin has disputed claims that the formation is overly defensive telling the official Port Vale website: “Stevenage hardly made a chance. That’s down to really good defending and players working exceptionally hard.”
However, he thinks his system does contain an attacking threat saying: “In the first 15 minutes we didn’t sit back, we got pushed back, but in the second-half we were able to impose our shape on them and we pushed them back. But it’s certainly not a defensive system, we are playing with three forwards.”
