Asked about Aspin by Fielding he replied: “He works hard. I like him. He has been feeling the pressure recently but I believe he will be at the club for a long time.”
Talking about the appointment, Smurthwaite confessed “I was 95% towards appointing but Neil kept on cropping up. Micky Adams didn’t bring him on board but he did tell me to meet him and said he was a honest guy.
“I met Neil near my home and after half-an-hour or so I could tell he was a honest guy and would make an excellent manager.
“I want to take the club back to League One I believe we have the right football management structure and next season will be the year we deliver it.
“I want Neil Aspin to succeed. I like him and I have seen his plans for summer recruitment which excite me.”
