Vale could potentially have stayed up if they had scored and won but the game ended in a goalless draw.

After the game Brown told the media: “We’re very, very disappointed. The message from myself is apologies to supporters.
“To deliver relegation in my first job. We have had extremely difficult circumstances but you look back at some games, at Gillingham, and we start to beat ourselves up about where we’ve just missed out.
“Overall we couldn’t score a goal and that’s been the difference. Looking at the run-in it’s cost us dear.
“What we did is we got the best out of that group of players. You can see the effort was there but we’re just not good enough as a group.”
