Ken Griffiths player profile:
Playmaker Ken Griffiths was a key member of Port Vale’s legendary 1953-54 Iron Curtain side.
Locally-born, he joined Port Vale as an amateur in 1945 and became professional in 1950.
He was a regular in the 1950-51 season and scored 16 goals during the record breaking 1953-54 season which saw the club win promotion. However, he was unfortunate to miss the side’s FA Cup semi-final game through injury. Arguably if Griffiths had played the club may not have narrowly lost to West Brom.
Injuries affected his performances from 1956 and he was sold to Mansfield Town for a “four figure fee” in 1958. He had made 196 appearances during his time with the Valiants and averaged a goal every four games.
