John Ridley player profile:
John Ridley was a tall utility player who spent two successful spells at Port Vale FC.
He initially progressed through the club’s junior ranks to make his first-team debut in 1973. He soon became a regular and was named as player of the year in 1976. He was loaned to US side Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the summer of 1978 and later that year he was sold to Leicester City for a then club-record £55,000 fee.
He returned to Burslem on a free transfer from Chesterfield in 1982 and he then helped the club to promotion in the 1982-1983 season.
In 1985 he decided to leave the Valiants in order to join local non-league side Stafford Rangers in a player-coach role. In total, he had made over 300 appearances for Port Vale during his two spells.
