Port Vale’s Czechoslovakia Tour, 1960

We present a series of photos taken by two of the actual players involved in Vale’s famous 1960 tour of Czechoslovakia.


In the summer of 1960 Vale engaged in a highly successful three match tour of Czechoslovakia. It was such a success that the Czech national team made Vale Park their base when they subsequently toured England.

The results of the tour were (Vale’s score first) 1-1 v Gottwaldov, 2-0 v Prerov and 1-0 v Teplice.

We’ve been handed these exclusive pictures taken by former Vale players Ken Hancock and John Poole

Both players allowed the Regenerate Stoke campaign to use these photos.

Awareness of the plight of Lidice was high at the time of Vale’s visit and the Valiants did vist the village. The Vale players were given a commemorative pin and a gold enamelled ceramic vase at a visit to a factory near to Lidice.
