Chairman Norman Smurthwaite has spoken to the official Port Vale website about the search for a new manager.

Some of the key points raised were:

  • There have been 78 applicants
  • Of those there were 15 “calibre” applications
  • Five applicants that “I would never have expected”
  • Three outstanding candidates
  • Of those one “has done everything in English football but been out of the game for a while”
  • Another was “considered to appoint when Micky left” and has contractual obligations for next couple of weeks
  • Third applicant has never managed in the UK but is “extremely high-profile”
  • All three want to be the manager of Port Vale
  • Smurthwaite praised attitude of Dave Timmins and Michael Brown
  • Paul Bodin has left for “genuine personal reasons” and was a “good guy”
  • Some “pretty drastic changes” could come in the next few days regarding the retained list
  • Trying to bring back the attitude of the team which won promotion under Micky Adams
