Port Vale all-time top-scorer Wilf Kirkham video
Published for the very first time on YouTube, here is a clip of Port Vale’s record goalscorer Wilf Kirkham in action.
This rare video footage shows legendary Port Vale striker Wilf Kirkham in action for the club.
OK, so the game happens to be a 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa in a 1926 FA Cup clash but here are both of Wilf Kirkham’s goals. The video is almost a hundred years old so the quality isn’t great, but hopefully it’s worth it to catch a glimpse of our club’s record goalscorer in action…
Club legend Wilf Kirkham remains as Port Vale’s record goalscorer. The locally-born player had two spells with the club. He turned professional in 1923 and between 1923 and 1929 he scored an impressive 134 goals in 211 appearances. After a spell with neighbours Stoke City he returned to the club in 1932 when he added a further 19 goals.
Kirkham scored thirteen hat-tricks for the Valiants and was noted for his “Kirkham Special” hook shots.
He retired from football in 1933 to focus on teaching and he eventually became a headmaster.
Wilf Kirkham passed away in 1974 aged 72 years of age.
