Wycombe 1-1 Port Vale
Wycombe 1-1 Port Vale: The Valiants mathematically sealed promotion after a 1-1 draw at Wycombe in a game which marked the end of Vale legend Gareth Ainsworth’s final game as a player.
A much-changed Vale side put in a lacklustre performance for their final game of an extraordinary game and it was no suprise when the home side took the lead. However, the award of a penalty for Chris Neal’s challenge was much debated as it did look a soft penalty decision. Morgan gave Neal no chance from the spot.
Little else of note took place with Port Vale opting too often for long balls up the centre of the pitch.
Gareth Ainsworth entered the pitch on 76 to a standing ovation from both sets of supporters.
The introduction of substitute Lee Hughes on 62 mins had sparked Vale into life and the veteran netted his tenth of the season with eleven minutes left to play.
That concluded the action and all that was left was for fans and players to celebrate the end of an astonishing campaign that saw Port Vale rise from administration to promotion.
Well done to everyone at the club!
