Port Vale forward David AmooThe lack of a cutting edge

It’s been a common theme throughout this season but it’s the same old story – for all their possession play, the Valiants created less than a handful of clearcut chances. With creators like Mitch Clark, David Amoo (pictured), David Worrall, Tom Conlon and Scott Burgess in there, Vale don’t lack the creative personnel. With Tom Pope, Mark Cullen, Theo Robinson and Devante Rodney all off the mark they don’t lack the strikers either. But despite all of that, something isn’t quite there. For me, too often Vale went sideways or back rather than a ball into the danger area. It could be tactics, it could be formation but Vale need to use their possession to create chances or we will be seeing this sort of game again…

For all the frustrations caused by Vale’s performance, praise is due to opponents Kings Lynn. Their line-up with a pacy forward line causing the likes of Leon Legge (pictured) problems all game was perfect for their counter attacking game and they took their chance when it came.  I wish then well in the next round.

It’s expected that John Askey will shuffle his pack for the Football League Trophy clash with Liverpool B. However, this game could have consequences in the League campaign. If fringe performers such as Harry McKirdy (pictured) or Mark Cullen can come in and impress or the likes of Manny Oyeleke can prove his fitness then it gives Askey a welcome selection quandary for the next League match.

In these desperate financial times, perhaps the biggest negative from Saturday is the loss of potential cup revenue into the Vale’s coffers. With no fans coming into stadia, the ability to generate money from elsewhere is vital and getting into round two would have brought some welcome revenue in.

More urgency required when we are in possession.as kings L were rushing back to cover or fill the penalty area.Often too slow to cause them problems Can’t see why we playJoice when most of the play is in opposition half & when they scored he was nowhere near their scorer. We could have put Cullen alongside Pope. We hardly put any shots in.

Credit to Kings Lynn with their game plan but we remain slow in playing the critical ball when in possession. The FA cup can prove a financial bonus. Seperate note good to see Billy Paynter on the coaching team I was managing him in the youth set up and remember him well had to keep reminding him to tuck his shirt in.
