Young midfielder Rhys Walters scored twice in the first-half as Port Vale defeated Wigan Athletic 3-1 in a friendly game.
Vale started the game with a trialist in their eleven and on fifteen minutes Walters had given the visitors the lead with a shot from the edge of the box. On 42 minutes the midfielder got his second again from the edge of the area.
Vale made a number of changes at the break which saw recent signings Mason Terry and Jasper Moon introduced plus two trialists. It was one of the trialists who put Vale three up on 53 minutes with a volleyed finish.
Vale were able to introduce substitures including youth teamers Miracle Orisakwe and Eddie Lake before the hosts pulled a goal back. They threatened to narrow the lead only for goalkeeper Mason Terry to produce a fine save on 75 minutes.
It finished 3-1 to the Valiants on a productive afternoon for Jon Brady’s team.
