Early goals from Martin Sherif and Jordan Gabriel stunned Edgeley Park as Vale ended up worthy winners over promotion chasing Stockport. Here’s our match report.
Team News
Probably as a result of Vale’s heavy workload, manager Jon Brady made six changes which including starts for the likes of Ben Garrity, Tyler Magloire, Ben Waine and George Hall.
There were some interesting additions on the bench with George Byers and Ben Heneghan returning from injury and youngster Jack Shorrock included in the squad.

Tyler Magloire – started
First-half
Relegated Port Vale turned the form table on its head as they powered into a two goal lead in the first-half.
The Valiants went into a shock early lead with the first decent move of the game. Ben Garrity fed Waine down the flank and his ball found Sherif who converted well from close range. It was 1-0 to Vale after just three minutes.
Afterwards, Stockport took control of possession but found Vale in resilient form. It was even better for Vale on 22 minutes. Some poor Stockport defending saw the Valiants win the ball back and Gabriel picked up a loose ball, ran into the box and unleashed a great curling drive to find the net. Man City manager Pep Guardiola was in the crowd and no doubt impressed by the Valiants’ first-half play.
Jack Diamond, who already had goals against Vale earlier this season, was looking Stockport’s dangerman and he hit the site netting on 31 minutes. However, the goal had boosted Vale’s confidence. A lovely ball from Walters nearly found Waine in the box and George Hall had another shot blocked.
The home side countered with a header from Sidibe which found the roof of the net. The dangerous Diamond drove another shot over shortly afterwards.
There was appeals for a red when Waine was pulled back but the ref decided there was a covering player thought that was debatable. From the free-kick George Hall drove the ball just wide. At the break the unlikely score-line saw Vale two-up and arguably it could have been more.
Half-time: Stockport County 0-2 Port Vale

Sherif – second Vale goal
Second-half
A composed and classy performance by the Valiants saw them upset the odds and return to Burslem with three points.
Vale made a double change at the break to rest tired legs. Ethon Archer and Onel Hernandez came on for Ben Waine and George Hall. Archer had an early snapshot after yet more hesitation in the County defence. The home side’s first chance saw Diamond’s effort well saved by Gauci. However, despite home side pressure, Vale were still looking dangerous when they attacked. There was a further chance for Archer after a good ball by Ward. Another lovely Vale move, this time by Walters, almost set up Gabriel for another chance.
Tyler Magloire, another player who has had his critics, had grown into the game after a shaky start and he made an excellent last-ditch challenge to deny Norwood on 67 minutes. Stockport were starting to get more desperate but Vale were keeping it simple and staying calm as they entered unfamiliar waters this season. Stockport’s day was summed up by a 70th minute effort from sub Bate who skied his shot miles over the bar.
County continued to press in the closing stages as Andresson headed over on 75 minutes. But it wasn’t all one-way traffic as the lively Hernandez broke and his ball was nearly forced over the line by a County defender. Then fellow sub Archer beat the defence but his weak shot was saved. Vale’s defence stayed strong with sub Heneghan putting in a brave block late on. It forced Heneghan off for treatment and Stockport scored against the ten men through Bailey. There was now minutes left. It caused some anxious moments, including screams for a penalty when Barry went to ground in the box, in the final minute, but the Valiants held on for the win.
It was a fantastic performance, seemingly out of nowhere, as the Vale sealed a well deserved and completely unexpected away win.
Full-time: Stockport County 1-2 Port Vale

Analysis and Opinion
The match
It was noticeable how confidence can positively effect this Vale side. The two goal cushion enabled them to calm down and play sensible football. They looked a different team – sadly too little, too late to save the season. At times, Vale were all over Stockport’s patched-up defence. The energy and commitment was evident throughout the entire team. There was some lovely play from the away side with arguably one of their best performances this campaign. Where has this team been hiding all season?
The players
There were some cracking performances. Ben Waine, George Hall and Martin Sherif (with probably his best Vale performance) were a menace to the County defence. Ben Garrity, Rhys Walters and the unsung Grant Ward (with probably his best game) all did well in the middle. At the back, Gauci and Magloire had the occasional wobble at the start but Humphreys was solid. In summary, everyone, including the subs, had a good game.
Star player
For once, there’s too many to pick one… Rhys Walters was classy, Jordan Gabriel was outstanding, Cam Humphreys classy, Ben Garrity was commanding and even the much maligned Martin Sherif had a great game. So, for once this season, it goes to the whole team.
Summing up in a sentence
Stockport stunned by sensational Vale.

Bewildering performance and result, given how Vale were outplayed by Stockport in the League and FA Trophy home defeats. Much food for thought.
As Victor would say “ I don’t believe it” The Vale played some good football,sh if only.
Vales performances have continued to improve even though are fate had looked decided months ago. We all know the forward line is where we need to improve, personally I wouldn’t be to disappointed if we were to keep Archer if the price was right. Or a season loan. Vale went down with a squad much worse than this two years ago, and with a totally incompetent Manager, so strangely I’m looking forward to next season. Brady is stamping his personality on both the players and performances, and although it’s early days, it’s looking good!
Ian Mountford – I like the look of Archer too. However, he cost Luton £500k at the start of the season so he’s a fairly recent addition for them and perhaps they see him as a long-term prospect) i.e. don’t want to sell or loan out). If he is out of favour he’s potentially out of our price range. In terms of a a long-term loan, having had experience with Cheltenham I’m also not sure Luton would want him to play L2 football next season. I hope I’m wrong as I’d certainly be happy with him being with us next season.
What a difference from the Plymouth game after being thrashed twice by Stockport I never saw this one coming gives me a lot more hope for next season congratulations
