After signing the likes of Lorent Tolaj, Ronan Curtis, and Jayden Stockley, Vale fans are understandably excited about the season ahead. Despite witnessing relegation last campaign, the new era under Darren Moore is taking shape and Port Vale look ready to mount a serious promotion push this season.
Vale fans aren’t the only set of supporters who are happy with their clubs’ business so far, though. In fact, League Two is a highly competitive competition filled with teams that are capable of securing promotion. While many fans will still fancy Vale at 7/2 in the sports betting odds for promotion this season, getting back to League One at the first time of asking certainly isn’t a foregone conclusion, especially when looking at some of the shrewd additions that have entered the league already. From Doncaster to Carlisle, there have been some top signings.
Harry Smith swaps Sutton for Swindon Town
Following Sutton’s relegation to the National League, it comes as no surprise to see their main danger man, Harry Smith, depart the club. Smith has re-joined promotion hopefuls Swindon Town after previously being on loan at the club. The big physical presence made 42 appearances for Sutton last term, scoring 14 goals across all competitions and he is tough to contain on his day.
Doncaster have snapped up Billy Sharp
After unexpectedly reaching the play-offs last season, Doncaster Rovers will be looking to go one further this season and secure promotion. The club is certainly proving how serious they are after securing the services of veteran striker Billy Sharp. While his best days are behind him, Sharp is still a massive signing at this level. Sharp was Rovers’ club-record signing in 2010 and the 38-year-old will be keen to get his career back on track after playing 13 times in the Championship for Hull last season. Should he find his rhythm again, then goals are guaranteed.
Sam Sherring has joined Milton Keynes
During his time at Northampton Town, Sam Sherring’s defensive performances caught the eye. As a result of his undoubted ability, Sherring was expected to depart the Cobblers for a fellow League One side. Instead, Milton Keynes Dons have beaten off the competition to sign the 24-year-old centre-back who has won promotion from League Two previously.
Alex Bass is now a Notts County player
One of the best goalkeepers in the league last season while on loan at AFC Wimbledon from Sunderland, Alex Bass’ impressive performances between the sticks have led to Notts County investing in his services on a permanent basis. Bass kept 17 clean sheets in 48 appearances across all competitions for the Wombles last season. For County, getting Bass in is somewhat of a coup.
Cole Stockton has signed for Salford City
It can be tough finding a goal machine in the lower leagues, but Cole Stockton is a player who certainly knows where the goal is. Although his career has stagnated following his move to Burton Albion, Stockton is a player who has made the League One Team of the Season previously. With over 100 career goals to his name, the forward is a big signing for Karl Robinson’s Salford. Just last season while on-loan with Barrow, Stockton impressed, scoring seven goals in 17 games.
Carlisle have re-signed striker Charlie Wyke
Carlisle United are a team capable of finishing in the top spots in League Two this season and securing the signature of Charlie Wyke shows just how serious they are. Wyke scored seven goals in 18 league appearances for Wigan in League One last season, making him a notable acquisition for the League Two side.
