Historic matches
In 1993, Port Vale celebrated a historic 3-1 FA Cup victory over their neighbours Stoke City. In addition, the team successfully progressed in the Autoglass Trophy (a tournament for 2nd, 3rd Division and Conference teams). In this tournament, Vale also defeated arch-rivals Stoke City and eventually reached the semi-finals.

By the 15th minute, Paul Kerr, after receiving a pass from veteran striker Bernie Slaven, struck an irresistible strike. The club’s fans were ecstatic. But that wasn’t all. Slaven brought the black and white fairytale closer, making the score 2-0. In the second half Stockport were fighting for the Cup and half an hour before the final whistle Kevin Francis hit the net to make it 2-1.
The time on added by the referee seemed to last forever, but the final whistle blew – Port Vale won. Captain Dean Glover lifted the first trophy in the 117-year history of the club. After the game, the players made a triumphant return to Burslem, followed by victory celebrations.
