John Nicholson player profile:
A solid centre-half, John Nicholson set a club record of 208 consecutive appearances for the Valiants.
The defender started his career at Liverpool but he made just one senior appearance for the side in four years.
He joined the Valiants in 1961 for a £2,000 fee and quickly established himself as a first-team regular. He also scored the only goal of his professional career on the 16th October 1961 against Southend United. Established as a first-team regular, his unbroken spell in the Port Vale first-team spanned from 1962 to 1965.
He was dropped in September 1965 and his protests brought about a £5,000 move to Doncaster Rovers.
Tragically, he was killed in a road accident in 1966 aged just 29 years of age. The Port Vale directors subsequently made a donation to his widow.
