Port Vale 2-3 Wycombe reaction: fans say midfield is a real concern
A round-up of comments following Port Vale’s shock home loss to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday…
Players and coaching staff
“Dan Turner is a young boy challenging for minutes. The plan was always to put him on around the hour mark after he put in such a good shift last Saturday. His energy levels are great, he did well last year in patches but didn’t score the goals so hopefully the goals will come.”
Michael Brown
“A team like Port Vale will put you under pressure at some time. They are a good outfit; they were a League One club last year so for us to be in it at the end is awesome. They put some good goals past Crawley last week, they played really strong and fully deserved to win that game so we worked really hard this week on how we were going to play. It was a tough game but I’m glad we got the three points.”
Gareth Ainsworth
“They certainly raised their game at 3-0 and it was difficult for us to come back into the game. We were going to make some changes at half-time but we felt as if the players had to go back out and see if we got a reaction and see what their character was like.”

“Much like last year we still have no creativity going through the middle of the team. Someone to drive past the forwards or to put through a defence splitting pass. We can only go wide and today that didn’t work for us. We’ve seen people get excited about our signings but to me some of them are not much different to our homegrown players. Pyke, Denton, Whitfield, Harness are all still finding their way in the game and are only here to get experience, other than them coming from a higher level are they any better to Reeves, Turner, Gibbons?”

“My worry is we still haven’t addressed the central midfield area and we haven’t had a decent midfielder in my view since Loft. Week after week last season we were overrun in midfield and we’ve carried on where we left off.”
Bycars Ender
“The midfield were bypassed and we were incapable of a forward pass.”
Hagrid
“Midfield was literally non-existent.”

“The midfield looked pedestrian but overall Vale players looked as though it was the first time they’d played together whereas Wycombe looked a well organised and oiled team. Michael Brown needs at least a quality midfield player and has much work to do.”
