Match report: Carlisle United 2-1 Port Vale
Port Vale exited the League Cup in the first round after a disappointing performance against League Two side Carlisle.
Bruno Ribeiro made four changes to the side that drew with Bradford including first starts for Chris Mbamba, Anton Forrester and a debut for Calvin Mac-Intosch.
Carlisle had much the better of the first period as Vale failed to create any meaningful chances on goal. The home side took the lead on 27 minutes when Charlie Wyke took advantage of poor defending to fire home. With four minutes to go till half-time Shaun Miller broke clear to put Carlisle 2-0 up at the break.
Ribeiro made two changes at the interval bringing Jerome Thomas and JJ Hooper on for Defreitas and Kelly. Vale immediately looked more dangerous and captain Anthony Grant fired home Vale’s first goal of the season on 51 minutes to halve the deficit.
The 4-2-2 formation employed in the second-half seemed to suit Vale better but they were unable to force an equaliser as the home side reached the second round in some comfort.
It was a disappointing performance by the new-look Vale side who will now aim to bounce back in front of the Vale Park crowd on Saturday.
