Digest: 500-up for Paynter, Smith joy, cut-price Irons
Here’s our occasional round-up of Vale stories including a Football League Paper honour for full-back Ben Purkiss.
Purkiss in team of the week
Ben Purkiss was in fine form during the 2-0 win over Gillingham as he set-up both Vale goals. His reward is a place in the Football League Paper’s League One team of the week:

Paynter marks 500th game
It was also a memorable weekend for Hartlepool United striker (and former Port Vale youth team graduate) Billy Paynter who made the 500th League appearance of his career. Nice, erm, beard Billy!

Joy for Smith
He may be injured at the moment but Nathan Smith has played a major role for Torquay United this season. This weekend they moved to the safety of 50 points – a remarkable achievement considering they spend the first-half of the season in the National League relegation zone.
