Port Vale owner says it’s time for players to deliver
Chairman Norman Smurthwaite says players need to convince fans and show that they are “punching above their weight.”
The club slipped to an embarassing FA Cup defeat to Exeter City on Sunday and need to bounce back straight away after a week of controversy off the pitch.
I want them to regain the faith of the fans. That won’t come easily because Vale fans aren’t a forgiving bunch…
Smurthwaite was clearly riled by manager Rob Page’s suggestion that the club are “punching above their weight” in the league and told the Sentinel: “If Rob thinks they are punching above their weight, then I want them to show that’s the case.”
He also wants the players to win back the trust of the supporters adding: “I want them to regain the faith of the fans. That won’t come easily because Vale fans aren’t a forgiving bunch.
“I would love to be proved wrong. I want them to show that they are not underachieving, I want them to overachieve.
