Alan Oakes player profile:
The Port Vale FC coach Alan Oakes was forced to make a solitary appearance for the Valiants after the club suffered an injury crisis before the match again Plymouth Argyle in October 1983.
At the age of 41 years and 60 days, he thus became the club’s oldest post-war outfield player although he was unable to prevent a 1-0 loss.
It turned out to be the final game of his long playing career. Oakes had made over 500 appearances for Manchester City and a further 200 plus for Chester City and totalled 924 senior appearances for four clubs.
Away from playing, Oakes had a four year spell on the Vale Park coaching staff from 1983 to 1987 including a period as assistant manager. He also managed Chester City in the seventies and was assistant manager for Chester in the 1980s.
