Alex Mathie was born in Scotland and began his career with Glasgow Celtic. he was playing for Greenock Morton when he was signed on loan by Port Vale FC. The loan spell, in 1993, saw Mathie make three appearances for the Valiants without scoring. He then returned back to his parent club Morton. Mathie had later spells with Ipswich Town, Dundee United and York City and retired from playing in 2007.
