King John always gets a bad press where as his brother Richard the Lionheart is considered a legendary king. Little is mentioned about Richard only spending 6 months of his reign in England the rest spent fighting the Crusades. King John was a cruel man and the Robin Hood legend certainly painted him in a bad light. The Magna Carta was brought into being to protect against the Monarch having unlimited powers and protection from illegal imprisonment. Probably thereby achieving more than his more respected brother who was an absent Monarch.

Richard the so-called Lion Heart was the main reason for England being bankrupt consequence of funding the Holy Wars.

As a boy I would get verbal stick from some of my peers for choosing to cast Richard as an enemy of the 'State.

It's amazing how the way history is presented colours people's interpretation of it. The Richard / John thing always interested me as a kid because of the Robin Hood connection and once I started digging for some real information as opposed to Ladybird books or The Adventures of Robin Hood it was a revelation to find the reality was very different from the popular view.
I love your 'enemy of the state' analysis, Barry, made me laugh. I hold that view of monarchy in general, especially pre-constitutional monarchs, who were virtually all only concerned with personal power and wealth.

True Bon'Ami. Naseby 14th June 1645 was the beginning of the end for absolute rule by British monarchs.
