Another small success in the vinyl comeback - because there must be places where people can go and see and touch and admire the wonderful things called album covers (and picture singles, and labels) and realise that downloads are for nothing.

The artwork and cover, the labels, posters, picture discs are all part of the true culture of owning music and I'd also like to see the back of the cheap, tacky pieces of easily breakable cack that go under the name of CDs.

In some cases now, the vinyl versions erleased contain a CD so you canload the music to play from a PC / IPOD or whatever, but keep the album to look at and reference the cover and the vinyl itself just for playing on special occasions.

Compare something like The Who's Quadrophenia (or Tommy) - you need the album cover with its 24 pages or whatever, a download or lowlife CD version just wont do. Masterpieces of artwork like King Crimson's first album can only be appreciated in album size.

So good for HMV, and I hope they stock more vinyl and the vinyl revival continues and gathers pace.

i own some vinyl, but not a ton, i have no beef with cds though. easily breakable? what are you doing with them?!

It was the trashy plastic cases that I really meant were easily breakable, CDs themselves are quite hardy.

CDs would have been ok if they had issued them in album size sleeves, in other words keep the album sleeve which is sometimes like a book, and find a place inside it for the CD - the printed matter that accompnies CDs is just too small, and doesn't feel worth having.

I wonder if some bright spark will propose online football programmes soon, that would also be a horror Id hate to see.

as has been stated on here, its great that an institution in this country like HMV hasnt gone the way of woolworths etc. they need to get rid of selling gadgets and possibly dvds etc and go back to selling music. personally i blame todays pop garbage and over use of autotune and undertalented nobodies off x-factor and the like for the downfall of music sales. much prefer to listen to a band be able to play their instruments and write their own music. vinyl will be the deathknell of the cd :) my collection grows by the day

a lot of the cd's i buy these days are from indie labels that come up with quirky ideas to keep cd's (and specifically artwork/inlays etc) original and unique - walnut tree records (RIP) were a fine example of that.

but yeah i get your point.

i like, and buy, (but in a smaller quantity than i used to) cd's and vinyl, and would hate to see my collection 'go digital' - despite the fact that i do obviously listen to and store a reasonable chunk of music on my pc
