Marc Richards

The guy behind me at the end of the game says the second goal shot was going a yard wide until Neal (diving back towards his goal line) diverted it with his hand enough for it to hit the post and go in.

Surely that's not right? Neal dived to his left and parried a shot wide then Richards got to it and hit it in from a narrow angle. No way it touched Neal on the way was there??? Or was I seeing things.

A lot of people near to me were shouting abuse at him. One woman near to me was shouting to break his legs. I really do despair at some people who call themselves fans. Marc Richards served Port Vale well and his attitude today was fantastic. How people can shout that to him is beyond me. He played really well and his movement caused us a lot of problems. I was relieved when he went off.

You weren't seeing things Jean - it happened as you said, but after parrying the initial shot by Neal it left Richards further forward than him so when Rico hit the cross shot Neal had to dive towards his own goal. He got a hand to it and (apparently) the deflection was then towards the goal.

You are right Neal parried the shot to his left and then Richards scored from the tight angle. If Neal had left it then it would have gone for a goal kick.

I've said it on the match thread. Ainsworth deservedly gets applause when he plays against Vale. He was at Vale for 12 months. Rico, was at Vale for 5 years, scored 100 goals, turned down chances to leave and gets a bucket load of abuse. Of those who booed him, who would turn down a double your salary offer to secure you and your families future?

I was sitting at the back directly behind the goal and I was pretty sure the first shot - which was also deflected - was actually going in. I've just seen it again on telly and there is no way Neal touched Richards' shot - it just went straight from Richards' on to the post and into the net.
