Best Front 2 Option?

I think the problem with Dodds supporting Pope is that now Pope's getting so much attention from defenders, it leaves Dodds as the main goal threat, particularly when the wide players are out of form.

Problem is we don't have a front two that really work anymore. Dodds has to be the man for now I'd say but the wingers aren't doing enough to occupy the opposition enough to give him the chance to do his stuff. Therefore Williamson's more direct approach would probably be the best option...........HOWEVER if we tightened up the midfield enough to get Dodds into the team in an attacking midfield role Pope and Hughes would be the best.

 

In other words until we get it right behind the front two I don't think it matters what we play.

Pope and Dodds - Dodds doubles up as a midfielder which allows the wingers to get forward a lot more, as we don't need to be worried about being over run in midfield.

 

Wiliamson on as super sub in games where Dodds is ineffective.

 

Hughes on if Pope needs a rest.

 

Agree with you PV1993. We need Dodds playing just in front of the midfield and playing off Popey.

They may be the best two but I've been to every game they've played together and I just don't see them working. Hughes runs around a lot which leaves Pope isolated for large periods. Pope is at his best when players make runs around him to give him that bit more space.

TF - If Hughes is running off pope then he must be taking defenders with him.

 

Pope and Hughes when played together have scored goals at a higher rate than Pope and Williamson or any other combination since January 1st.

Dont get me wrong I think Tom has had a wonderful season, but he is having one of those spells where the chances he is having are not been put away, that is no fault of his strike partner and was bound to happen. If we create more opportunities then the correct thing to do is to have Hughes and Pope in the team. We all know Hughes is a natural finisher and seems to be able to be in the right place at the right time.

 

To have Pope on his own with an unsharp/recently injured Dodd's for example will not work. In my opinion of course.
