Johnny Woodward

Goalie is deffo John Connaughton who was a very good keeper' date=' except the one time in an FA cup replay at home to Walsall he let a back pass go straight through his hand and legs and into the back of the net, but he used to command his area very well.[/quote']

Yes good goalkeeper John Connaughton signed from Sheff Utd for 15,000 John went on for a few seasons at Vale

played over a couple of hundred games

My first ever away game was Wrexham when I was about nine years old, a 1-1 all draw played in front of over 19 thousand around 1970, someone got sent off, John James I think?

6000 Vale fans there that day.Unbeaten in 19 from the start of the season.I think Tommy scored.I can remember some Vale fan running around with a coppers helmet on when there was a load of trouble at H/T and someone picked up the corner flag and used it as a spear when we changed ends.

Yeh.. over 19,000..... Vale were top and unbeaten, Wrexham were second and 100% at home... something had to give! Remember the road from Nantwich to Wrexham was a stream of black and white scarves out of car windows. Tommy Mac scored for the Vale.. back to goal over his shoulder.... Jamoe and their number 2 Steve Ingle (dirty little ******) got sent off. Loads of trouble at the station... We hate Gaskell!

Two things I remember vividly about that 1970 game is that I was travel sick on the bus going and that my dad for some reason took us in their end and I was the only person in there wearing a black and white hat!!:ninja:

Never forget that game, Vale fans went into the largely uncovered away end but then ran straight, down the pitch and took their end. There was non stop trouble as Wrexham fans arriving were trying to get in but their end was full of Vale fans. Fighting was going on all over the place and i believe Stoke police who had come with fans on the special train actually turned on the Wrexham police who were indiscriminately hitting Vale fans some of which were young kids. I remember being chased back to the station by a horde of Wrexham fans, i dashed down a sde track and ran across the tracks to get onto our train. As i got onto the train loads of bricks came through the windows, it was a cold but happy journey home as our unbeaten record was intact and their 100% home record had gone.

I remember us losing 6-2 at Wrexham at a night match. Connaughton was in goal for that game & was asking Vale fans to keep the ball as long as they could when the ball came into the away end. We were that bad that night.

Went this one on me motor bike with me brother, stopped off at a pub on the way there, when we finally got to the ground we were 5-0 down.
