The Future?

If the owners want to develop youngsters then Adams` days are numbered as he doesn`t play them unless desparate and replaces them as soon as possible.

As somebody said earlier, this will more than likely be a few years away yet,so your guess is as good as mine as to whether Adams will still be here then.

I've said it before and I'm sure many others have too - I'd much rather watch Vale playing good, attractive, attacking football in a lower league than watch the dross they're serving up down the road, even though they are the 'bigger' club

I have had a few Sjoke mates telling me they have enjoyed watching Vale's brand of football to their own even though they have been winning games.

I've never alluded to this 'plum cup tie' malarky and I personally don't go for 'sugar daddies' either. If Port Vale are to succeed then as far as I am concerned it MUST BE as a GOING CONCERN.

That means livng within our means, building slowly but surely. Yes, a 'nice' cup-tie is good for the coffers now and then bu it' far too infrequent and by no means something on which to build a future.

A youth team set-up, for all it's 'promise' is simply a pipe dream at the moment - Jesus, you only need to read a number of any of the Threads on the main page to see that 'established' players are being ridiculed.......how do you think a 17yr old trainee would fare with this lot.......one mistake and he'd be crucified (and that's not purely by those on OVF).

My earlier banter with another poster was merely a distraction for a boring Sunday afternoon - off topic I admit and somewhat a total waste of keyboard time. But it brings into perspective that we, as 'Little' Port Vale are 'where we are'. The point is, where do we go from here, how much will it cost, how long will it take and are we (as fans) prepared to give the people running the show the time to put this into place whilst at the same time, expecting them to win football matches on a week to week basis, whilst improving the first team and investing in the future on an equal basis ?

That's if the long term plan is to go this way. My point is that we need consistency, which ever way we decide to go, and that I don't buy into this hysterical 'manager makes every football decision long and short term' that we heard during every potential take over. Which was shown to be ridiculous when the manager left a few months later. Managers are not concerned (aside from one offs like ferguson, Rudge and gradi) about the long term.

But you are right in that the fans, first team and everyone else would have to buy into it. However, people moaning online is totally different to having a go at games. And although we do hear the odd comment, I don't think the players get slated too much. James had an awful game yesterday, but didnt get grief.

Whenever we have had bids for the club or interest in takeovers, I always hear the same thing. 'The most important thing is to leave all the footballing decisions to the manager'. But is that the right way forward. Managers these days are lucky to spend more than 3 years at one club. How is that going to allow a club to build for the future?

When Mike Newton was interested, he suggested improving the youth set up and separating it from the first team management team to ensure stability. People were up in arms over this, as were adams and grew. A few months later adams left for sheff utd and a new manager with totally different ideas came in. Any manager in league 2 is going to have to, at times, scrap his way out of the league. Some will be successful, some will end up on the managerial scrap heap. Is this the best education for players like morsy, lloyd, davis and the young players now in the youth set up?

If we look at Swansea, and how succesful they have been. 20 Years ago they were at risk of going out of the football league. Now they have a great stadium, great facilities and are playing good football in the top league. Now I know other things play a part, but hasn't their recent success been partly due to consistency. They know what kind of football they want to play, and what kind of club they want. And they have appointed managers to fit in with where they want to club to go, not go where the manager dictates they do. Martinez was replaced by rogers who was then replaced by Laudrup. Crewe are an example at a smaller scale. Davis was appointed because he would continue with the way crewe do things. Yes they are only in league 1, but financially are secure. They tried appointing someone who was totally alien to their club ethos (thordson) and it was a disaster (and they ended up losing some good prospects due to it).

I fully expect some to have a go, and think Im suggesting things Im not. This isnt a 'sack the manager' post. Its an attempt to discuss the future, now we have what seems like at least medium term stability, where we want the club to go. Yes the manager should be picking the team, and deciding transfers. But in most other succesful industries, the manager doesn't dictate to the board of directors the direction the company product goes. If we want to improve our youth system, like has been suggested, then that needs to be a vision beyond the current manager, otherwise it will never attract the quality we need.

A long term directer of football like John Rudge has been at stoke would not hurt. It has not hurt them really. Considering when he took the role we played at a higher level.

I hope in all honesty that the wild smurfs develop a plan for the club that creates a stable environment for the football, the fans, and any other activities that are developed. It would be nice to think that the income from the football is just a bonus and that the club could sustain itself without it.

The fans will buy into it because it will become the norm not a change.

I think the club should dictate policy on all things related to itself, which includes the type of football we play and how they develop it. This will take out some of the highs and lows of new managers coming in, or the temptation to hire a manager for one specific reason.

Is it an essential we get out of this league?... I dont think it is, it would be a bonus but not a necessity.
