Match Thread: Exeter City v Port Vale

Poor performance by Vale. The team that started today were poorer than the team that gained promo via the play-offs. No Wilson or Worrall, Gibbons and Taylor departed, four key, class players who contributed massively in the play-offs.

Similar could be said vs Fleetwood but we were at home and scraped an unconvincing win.

Recruitment this window has so far been poor and two of Vale's most talented players have left. Can't believe we've let Jake Taylor leave and "replaced" him with Ojo and Holden. Just hope we sign some Lge1 experienced, quality players otherwise it's gonna be a long hard season.

See plenty of posters looking for us to throw the whole of the project out of the window after one poor result. Sign, sign, sign, don't care who we sign just sign a 'striker'
For goodness sake wait till 1st September before bemoaning our transfer policy.
Save your breath, a balanced view is lost on some on here.

How instrumental was Taylor today for Morecambe? And you're moaning about letting him go but demanding L1 experienced players when JT had no L1 experience at all, and Ojo has? At least back up the substance of your moan with a credible statement

Ojo and Holden are still settling in, you can't judge on a couple of games and in holden is coming back from a major injury. Give them and the team a 10  games and have players playing in there correct positions, then we can start to judge.

We will be ok

Our first tonking since DC took charge (Mansfield last game first season aside)

Poor today, that's obvious, but we're 2 x games in. These results will happen over the course of a season, especially in league 1. We've got 3 points on the board & another chance to get some more game time on Tuesday night in the cup.

Lots of players in need of game time & I think once our squad is up to speed we'll be absolutely fine. Holden, Conlon, Wozza, Wilson, Massey getn 100% + the few heads through the door & we will start to gel & pick up points.

Bad day at the office, lots of people losing heads. I appreciate Exeter is a long way to go to get spanked 4-0, lots of beer will no doubt have been consumed, but come on, back the boys, back the club & back DC.

Patience required. UTV. We go again.

Today’s result should serve as a wake up call for the powers that be at Vale. Time to get the cheque book open next week Carol. The trouble is, who will we get in now who is any good? Been saying it for weeks and have been getting shot down for it, recruitment has been shocking and today’s result demonstrates this. We have started the season with a worse squad than what we finished last season with and are we now in a higher division. I feared the worse when we couldn’t keep hold of Gibbons.

You can only judge a preseason at the end of the window and a season at it's conclusion. I think this results show the squad as it currently stands is probably lower mid-table at best. It's a slight concern that we will be 20% of the way through when the window ends this year IF our signings do come in late.

It's always a gamble going early or late for key players. Go early and you pay over the odds, go late and you may end up with players you don't really want. Rudge and Pullis were masters of the late deal. That said when Rudge went late he signed players who started early. The Massey situation does seem a little odd, I expected him to at least be on the bench. We also seem to have loaded the midfield with 3 players who prefer a holding role in Pett, Walker and Ojo; although I actually feel Walker might be better in the centre of the back 3 as I can only really recall Kelly being quite so immobile in midfield.

The management (and all suporters) know what we desperately need. Fingers crossed they are successful.  There are much tougher games to come and we need a good start or it will become a tough season.

yes. But they also do realise that a seasons 46 games long, not 2

So why are you and others seemingly so relaxed about writing off August's results?

This pre-season has been a shambles that could, in part, have been avoided. We have an incomplete squad that is unfit and lacking match fitness yet the problem seems to be with the fans who are pointing this out. Farcical.

You're wrong. We could of kept Gibbo. Rovers offered him 2k a week. He said he'd accept £1600 from us.  We said no.
