I never really go with the “more possession = an entitlement to win” argument. Spain were very easy on the eye and the first proper test England have had but as Clarke would say at times about Vale: England found a way to win and that’s more than just luck. I think last night’s performance was more encouraging than the other three put together.

Caught the game last night. For long periods they looked like a team that was paying for having it too easy in the group stages and then coming up against their first live opponent. Not hating on the womens game but if it’s ever to develop further there needs to be less knockover jobs like was seen in the early rounds, I’m not sure what good it’s doing for those teams or in fact the one England stuck 20 past not too long ago in a qualifier.

Overall winning a tough game like that will do them a lot of good going into the semis and maybe beyond. Great hit as well for the winner.

I think the answer to “what’s the point” re nations where the game infrastructure is less developed is effectively answered by Iceland who were making up the numbers in the men’s game for decades and now both their teams compete at a decent level. Just getting to the finals for teams like Northern Ireland might provoke changes towards professionalism and increased interest at home (although the game both sides of the border has to compete with gaelic sports) 5-0 wouldn’t take away from that. Norway was a freak result where a team that should have competed a lot better just collapsed. If you just stop the clock on development there would be too few teams and it all gets a bit incestuously boring - not unlike the failed idea of a European Super League for clubs.

I noted your hmmm response to this post. I like that! 👏👏👏

My own take on the quality of opposition to is that Norway were expected to provide a stern test. As it happened, it was one of those very rare games where everything clicked.

Austria qualified from this group, and gave a very creditable performance against Germany last night. With better luck, they could have won it.

We were up against it in the Spain game, but changes of tactics by both managers changed the game in our favour. How many times has it been said about the risks of sitting on a lead? Problem is, it often works, but when it doesn't the manager looks silly.
