Lionesses

Watching the lionesses is a joy.
They play with freedom and pace and good skill.
Perhaps it's a reflection of the still relatively early development of the women's game.
As yet untainted by big money, fear and cynicism.
Or it may be that women have a better attitude?
Long may it last.
It's a good job Vale are on the up (a woman's influence?), otherwise my head could be turned.

Totally agree, they are playing some lovely football and hope Southgates lot are watching them as they could learn a thing or two from them.

Wingers and wing backs that actually get down the flanks and put a cross in !

(Southgate lot) "yeah but it's easier just to pass it back to central defence, then I don't get all sweaty or get my boots too dirty" !

Would like to go and watch them when they play here later in the year but just can't bring myself to go and sit those red and white seats near the incinerator! 😂😂

Been a fan of the national team for many years now, could not get tickets for any England games but went MK Dons last week to watch Finland v Spain and going Brammall Lane tomorrow to see Switzerland v Holland.
Seen England a few times and just so everyone knows, they have a World Cup Qualifier in September at what used to be the Community Stadium - for a family day out it's well worth having to sit on those seats (of course wearing something black and white to counter the obvious down side).
Really enjoying watching the tournament and hopefully we can bring football home.

Germany will be our hardest game where they will be able to match us physically.

Well, let's hope so, as that would be the final🙂

Quarter final v Spain, probably, also a tough test.

Defence not really been tested, but the midfield, wide players and forwards have been outstanding. The goal from Alessia Russo was as good a bit of skill you would see anywhere. Georgia Stanway a real powerhouse in midfield constantly driving forward. Looking forward to the quarters.

I decided to judge it as a completely different game to the mens and when you look at it from that angle it's actually not too bad. It's slower and more methodical but there is a lot of emphasis on attack which makes it quite entertaining. You're not going to get many 30 yard screamers but that actually makes some of the goals well crafted.

The thing that needs development is the defending and goalkeeping, which is still quite amateur, but no doubt the quality has improved considerably over the last 10 years.

This is going to sound bad but there are very few women over 6ft tall and so it must be difficult for goalkeepers in the full sized goals, hence perhaps why the goalkeepers struggle?

Average height of a female player 5ft 4 to 5ft 7. Average height of a male player 6ft plus. I saw the Italy v England game at Vale Park a few years ago. It just isn't the same game they are playing. It doesn't transcend from sport to entertainment in my view. I've said all this before of course.

The point which has been made above is absolutely correct - it is different and shouldn’t be judged against the men’s game. No one criticises female sprinters for not being able to run as fast as Bolt. Or Serena Williams for not being able to serve as fast as John Isner but a lot of blokes mock women’s football because it’s not as “good” as men’s. Let’s be honest, we’ve watched some absolutely turgid stuff over the years from the England men’s team that have sent us to sleep!!!

Only problem with that is, that they want to be compared to the men monetary and facility wise. But who do they want to pay for it? The mens game.

The mens game has evolved naturally to what it is now, for over 100 years. But they want it NOW, even though their leagues all over the world, has literally almost no income, and no spectators.

If you listen to 'the price of football' podcast, they went over Arsenal Women's latest publicized accounts recently. They had a turnover of just over 4 million. And as he said on the podcast "that sounds amazing, until you actually go over the details". They generated just over 400k of income themselves, the rest was subsidized by the mother club, aka the mens team. So as he said "then it suddenly becomes much less impressive!"

He even states, and he knows what he's talking about, that women's football is a MASSIVE loss-making business for all clubs. Which also is why, expenses for the women's team, doesn't count towards FFP. Simply so the clubs doesn't just shut down the teams. So basically; it runs as a charity...

If the women can achieve the same rewards in tennis as the men I'm sure that's what the footballers want as well?
