The Hamil End

When I first started going Vale we used to have a couple of blocks of the Railway Stand towards where the family stand and Bycars was which was caged off and away fans went in there as well as the Hamil. Presumably as we had to give away fans a seated option even back then. Southampton fans went in there for the cup game in 94.

I think they would be entitled to 25% of the seats, for a cup game.

My memory probably playing tricks but I can't recall an away end as such. I'm referring to mid 70's .

Burnley and vale fans were definitely mixed in the hamil

Segregation started sometime in the 70s as the level of violence increased. Previously a train load of away fans at Burslem station would all go to the same part of the ground, as would a group of coaches.

Ah yes, I think that was why - it was before the seats went in the Hamil. The roof had been added but it was standing only so there was also a small seated area of the Railway given to away fans too. It was standing only when Vale fans were allowed in for the 1994 FA Cup game against Southampton so it must be around that time.

Away fans had away seats in the Railway since I first started going in 1987. There is CCTV footage on Youtube of Bolton fans in there in 1988. I think we turned it into a home area around 1992,.......Southampton being an exception.

I don’t remember the Railway paddock being partitioned, just the stand, but your probably correct.
In line with the railings in the stand, there was a large gate the width of the walkway but a never saw it shut. Since we usually stood on the half way line I rarely went that far, big games we would go Lorne St to avoid the crush.

Correct, I remember stood in front of Swindon fans when we played them and someone threw a spark plug which would have hit me in the face had it not been for the wired fencing above the wall. I was there for the Bolton game, we equalised in the 94th minute and seats started coming over.

Slightly off topic so I apologise.

Can anyone remember when the Hamil actually became the away end ?

I went as a toddler with my dad and remember that famous 4-3 v Grimsby we were in the Hamil . We were also in the Hamil against Burnley in the cup 1977 ?

But I also have a vague memory of Sheffield Wednesday taking the Bycars end.

So was just curious as to when it became an away end. Seems mad that it was mixed given that hooliganism was rife in those days too.

Grimsby. Fantastic view from the top of the Hamil. Possibly higher than the roof is now?

Etched in my memory.

May be totally confused but I’ve a distant memory of standing (no roof) on the Hamil when we beat them down the road in a pre-season ‘friendly’ the 88/89 promotion season - think it might have been the unveiling of an or THE electronic scoreboard too.

Don’t remember where their fans stood though?
