Why has the club allowed the situation to develop whereby Gibbo is available on a free?

I find it remarkable that Gibbo’s contract hasn’t been sorted out long before this. Will be a big loss if he goes.

To be fair to the club Gibbo has had to prove his fitness after the previous season.

Once we got to Jan its pointless having those discussions. I'm sure Gibbo wanted to play L1 so it would have been a case of wait and see what division we were in and subsequent wage structure for the league.

Thankfully the club and player inserted an extension clause in Smithy's contract if we got promoted. I suspect that was the same for Wozza as well.

I’m sure in the past we’d usually been in talks around jan time with players out of contract that we want to keep. However I wonder if the unprecedented situation with the manager is what delayed things with all 3 of them? That situation just can’t have been foreseen at all.

But also as MBE stated above Gibbo said in quite a few interviews about his contract that he needed to prove himself when he was injured. Also Proctor got injured too didn’t he after Christmas, so again maybe another factor in the delay for his offer as well?

I guess the issue why Gibbo is now a free agent is last year we couldn’t really offer a new deal as would have been concern over him having been out a year and DC didn’t get to see him to make a judgement.

This season of course in January maybe Gibbons didn’t want to discuss until the end of the season?

Hopefully we keep him though, if he can get over his injuries he is a level above and we saw that in the play offs. Really like him at RCB as well, although with Cass you can play him RWB in place of Woz and even LWB where he excelled earlier in the season so he’s versatile.

Odd we haven’t heard anything especially as some say Vale tweeted weeks ago that Mal had signed before deleting?

That's really useful to know. I had no idea, but as a former resident, I follow the fortunes of Adelaide United.

I moved there aged 14. My best mates were from Norton, Lymm and Rotherham. 75% of the kids in my school were from the UK.

Are you based in Adelaide? I worked there two weeks ago in he CBD, and visited a friend in Seaford/Port Noarlunga last week.

People are right Vale are a better side with a fit Gibbo in the team. He has grit and drives us forward. In recent times he has had serious injuries, something new for him. I suppose during that injury period it would have been a major gamble to give Gibbo a new contract. Looks like he has thankfully comeback from injury ok. Equally if it had been a career threatening injury we would have to be paying a players wage for 2 years who we couldn't use.

Ultimately had we given any injury prone player a longish contract and he was immediately injured once the season kicked in the club would of looked foolish. And just imagine this place with all of us medical and football injury specialists on here 🤣 .

No way could Vale of gambled on Gibbo any earlier, let's face it every tackle, stretch and collision we used to wince every time he came back in case it was a recurrence. Was it Rochdale away where he went off almost in tears ?

I'm sure plans were/are in place and i'm very hopeful he'll sign on the dotted line .

The club may have tried to tie him up, but Gibbo's agent has advised him to wait and see what offers come in with the promise other clubs will offer stupid money for you.  The club can't be held responsible for the actions taken by the players agents trying to get a bigger offer put on the table.

Does the club break its wage structure policy for one player and then have to do it for other players trying the same thing?  That is how other clubs have ended up in a mess and possibly putting them out of existence.  Glad I am not in control as that is a hard decision to solve.  You want to keep your best players, but not at the cost of putting the club in to a finance mess and then being docked points.

Hi,

No, I lived there for just over a year in the early 70's.

Been back in the UK since then.

Come on really? He’s come through the ranks (it’s highly likely he’s not one of the big earners because of that fact and his last contract was 3 years ago wasnt it now) and is trying to put a club out of existence because of his agent? Hes missed games through injury and he wants to be better paid than say the Tom Conlons, Dave Worralls, Tom Petts and James Wilson’s of the squad. Let’s at least credit a player with some common sense who’s been here a while. It just sounds like you just made that up in your head and are trying to pass it off as fact.

Gibbo will be load managed now for the rest of his career, unless he’s overloaded and then injured. Those are the only two options I can see going forward. That’s a big cost for a player who’s only good for 25 games, with 10 of those getting up to speed.

Nobody hopes it won’t happen more than me, but if we go into the new season with last year’s unreliables being deputised by fit but 2nd choice players we’ll get found out quickly.

I imagine that Proc didn’t come here for pennies last season and now he’ll be asking for more. Same with Gibbo. Can we not get equally good players for the same price and supplement them with other similarly high-quality players ready for the L1 challenge? I don’t see why not.
