Summer transfer targets/rumours, retained list etc

We ditched Cov and Taylor. Allowing them to leave when we don't have anyone in their place looks pretty amateurish. Can't remember this happening before.

If, as seems very likely, Covolan wasn't wanted by DC since the Swindon sending off, what had the club done to seek out a replacement? Not since the play-offs but since the turn of the year? A lot of us felt that (unfortunately) Taylor's face didn't fit and I believe he'd already been earmarked for a transfer out. That wasn't a sudden decision, neither was the decision to release Amoo and let Hirst leave. Those decisions will have been made months ago, so why are we still looking for replacements with 5 sodding days to go.

This also makes me think that we'll be left with squad players who struggled for game time in League Two.

My point is, most players sign two year deals, hence the ones we sign this season will impact next season.

But how many will need to be Championship quality, if they happen to be in the Championship they will be.

for those who think we will buy contracted players, do you really think the transfer fee for these players will get lower as time runs out for there current club to replace them??? surely it goes up as the cost of losing a player now is higher than in june for example!

this 'wait till the end of the window' strategy only works for players who aren't getting paid right now and no fee needs to be agreed. meaning we're chasing lads who haven't had a pre season.

its clear we've got red lines on wages and characters but its reaching the point where they need to be a bit less clear cut. we have around 11-12 players who are somewhere near match fit. principles won't win points. a less than perfect squad in reality which finishes 19th is better than a hypothetically perfect squad which has speedy up top in november because we refused to sign anyone who didn't fit our narrow blueprint.

The selling club may be desperate for the money, always 2 sides in negotiations.

We are certainly also looking to bring players in for a fee

Or we are in for contracted players , fees agreed , subject to parent club securing their target

of course, but with the season starting on saturday a team is less likely to sell a key man as they won't have time to replace them before points are played for.

imagine if someone bid for connor hall now or ben garrity. rightly we'd tell them to jog on as we wouldn't have time to get the replacement sorted.

I laughed when someone mentioned Izzy Brown the other day. If there is any truth in it, then I think you have to take a gamble on his fitness like we have with Proc and Wilson. If you can get 30 games out of him, then it will be worth it. Players of that quality don't land at your door very often.

Thats happened to us many times in the past so it does happen, remember the days when we always seemed to sell a player on the eve of a season

I'd have kept Taylor and Covolan until I knew we had replacements lined up.

Would we have received as much as we did for Taylor if we had already signed his replacement?

I don't think it would have made any difference. I presumed it was pretty much a nominal fee anyway.
