Can I ask what realistic ambitions  people have for next season? For me the number 1 realistic target is to stay in this league, then to push on there after. I know we need players & we will get them in ( hopefully). I must admit the only positions I'm a bit concerned about is the striking options. A permanent ST & a loan ST would put me at ease, sooner rather than later preferably. So to to other supporters what are your expectations & what positions do you think we are in need of? I really do believe in the 'process' & progress the club have adopted. I'm really excited about next season & looking forward to this season's campaign.

Comfortable mid table for me with a no1 GK, backup for Smith, 2 young strikers and a specialist RWB.

I agree totally we just need to stay in the league we don't have the budget to compete it's pretty obvious. Hats of to the owners who have done fantastic but the 90s success was built on rudgie generating the income through player sales which enabled us to bring in quality players, those days are gone. The owners are sensible and are not going to pay some of the crazy wages that teams are paying in our league even so we could still finish top half with a couple of decent loan signings and with DC in charge. Would snap your hand off for 20th with the business we have done so far though.

For me it's consolidation and who knows if we get a fair wind behind us maybe aim to finish top of the bottom half. I think that gives us something to build upon. It's very hard to compete with the biggest clubs in this league, just the sheer financial power they possess is nothing we can rival. Above all else though as you say stay in this league is the main target.

I'm anticipating it might be a slow start for us but I think with DC we've seen enough over his career that's generally how his teams go before picking up as the season develops.

For me Stone has earned the right to start as #1. He was great in our last few games. Wembley, he looked very nervous, understandable. Mix up with Gibbo, then a howler and saved by Hall. But kept his head up, made a couple of decent saves and sweeping up. He's a young lad for a keeper and that took some balls at Wembley.

I'd have kept Cov actually too, think he was worth another go. Yeah he screwed up a few times but coach it out of him. There was a decent keeper there.

He was a League 1 left back for Cheltenham. I like Hussey. He is getting a lot of blame for the games lost at the end of last season and particularly the incident where he fell over v Newport. That was actually part foul and part watering the pitch before kick off and after the players had warmed up creating a slippery surface in the corner. That day he also faced a situation where there were fundamental weaknesses in the midfield available which allowed the opposition to steam right through and onto the defence. Going forward the opposition had worked on stopping Hussey by marking up in the right way to prevent the pass interchanges on the left flank and crosses on the left foot. So he went backwards too much. Finally that was a period when Vale had lost the concept that strikers / forwards must actually get in the box!  This deprived him of targets to cross to. Because he is cautious on the ball he won't cross speculatively and again that caused going backwards.

So there is a need to reset him and to use him effectively. New season and new start. His game emphasises care on the ball and meticulous passing in squares and triangles. This can be slow but when he gets near the box and worked some space he can put in very effective crosses. He is also obviously good at corners and wide freekicks. He is fit and shows a good turn of pace going backwards in defence. Probably can improve on the last line of defence defending in the box. There is plenty positive to work with at League 1 level.

I like Hussey. I like he is more defensive than Benning, because it gives the option of playing a more cautious game, where, perhaps, we attack on the counter with a long ball out from defence? He's clearly a good player, and I feel he's  overly-criticised?

Why are people moaning? Maybe it’s a new virus?Behave. Our current best 11 is good enough to compete in League 1.A selective few additions, all in good time, will only make us more competitive.People expecting  us to pay 5/6k per week wages shows how out of touch they are with reality. The additions will come.Calm down .

Well said Howjy!!!

Its disappointing how polarised this forum is becoming. people unable to read opinions which aren't the same as theirs. Posters being labelled 'thickheads', dossiers being built up on when people got stuff wrong before which is brought up whenever they post, personal comments about peoples radio comments, people going on 'blocking sprees' of posters who have different views to them. so much anger in a few people!

I don't get at anyone individually just try and put my view across.read my posts, i never get at individuals just try and have a chat about footy in the summer whilst we wait for the season. It interestingly seems to be those 'trust the process' folks who are the most aggressive towards those who have a different view. not sure why they are so obsessed with everyone having the same opinion. Sometimes the argument is dealt with but more often than not the poster personally is attacked. complete inability to engage with a discussion when are argument is different to their own. a sign of social media and a sign of the times!

when i used to have debates in pubs before and after games there would be a clash of opinions but it was just that, opinions about footy, and despite having different views we recognised we were all vale fans!

there's maybe 1 or 2 who come on here to wind up but mostly i think it's just honest Vale fans who pay the same 300 quid for a season ticket who just have a different view. unfortunately this forum seems to be a cartel of about 5-6 very positive posters who spend all day on here and get very aggressive towards those on the most pessimistic side/those who take a different view. they seem to think their enforces for the club, all dissent must be quelled! think i'll go back to just being a viewer of the forum which is how i enjoyed ovf for years. hope everyone has a good season utv

It's not having differing views that's the problem...it's when people make up "facts" to back up their opinions, which tend to be nonsensical. And you can pick at the opinion and point out their flaws ans all that will happen is they will change their direction and claim to have been saying something different. RZ in particular was a nasty piece of work - and knew it! Rarely appeared on here when things were going well - which was a lot of the time; but being on here after every bad result, posting the same badly researched comments which were as personal a dig as you could get and suggested DC was guilty of things which, clearly, were not true! Also - I don't remember a single word of sympathy for DC when he experienced his tragedy - not a single word...and I called him out on that as lacking humanity. All this is why I blocked him - but, in any case - people who get blocked can still post their opinions...it doesn't alter that, but those of us who prefer to save our breath, and stop banging our heads against walls, in frustration, just prefer to block his kind...sadly, he winds so many people up that he is possibly the most quoted on here? Sorry if you don't like people taking steps to prevent having to read that kind of BS!

I'm anxious that we haven't made many new signings.

I'm also aware, that we only have X amount of fit players, potentially one striker and one goalkeeper at present. (thanks to the posters who repeatedly remind me every 15 minutes)

But I'm desperately trying to stay optimistic and 'hoping' the reason we are holding out is that we are aiming high and when the window closes we look back and regard it as a success. (only time will tell)

So my question is to the posters who are repeatedly going on about our lack of signing.

At this stage of pre-season, which of the following options would you of preferred?

1. Sign players of a lower quality to get numbers in?

2. Break the wage structure and pay what players are demanding and then suffer the consequences?

3. Hold out for quality players and hope their wage demands fall within our budget?

4. Sign d*ckheads who could upset the camp?

It's not easy being a manager, but I personally trust DC to do the right thing.

I'm option 3, I've got everything crossed it all works out.

I disagree with plenty of other people here, but I like reading and considering different opinions and we all love the Vale.

There is one person on my ignore list because they are revealed themselves to be obviously awful and/or a WUM. I don't see any of their tedious BS, which is excellent - at least, it is until the rest of you quote them.
