If we retain these midfielders, and, perhaps, even add another 1 or 2, we can rotate without worry and try to win the Papa john's (decent cash!) and, maybe have a good Cup run or two - rather than having to ""protect" players for the next League game? There is nothing at all wrong with trying to grab some extra cash!

That's true Tony.

Rotation will be the key. We can't afford to have the same amount of injuries next season

We definitely do not need 1/2 more midfielders. We have plenty now and probably 1 too many….  Rotation will and is always key, but we need some players in other areas of the pitch first.

Last seasons gone. What's done is done. New season, new league, new squad. All players start with a clean slate in pre season and have to prove themselves. They need to fit in with whatever style of play DC sees fit for L1 meaning there's bound to be a bit more movement.Players can't live in past glory, thats how you get relegated.
We spent a long time doing this with the 90s players and it cost us alot.

Conlon and Walker will need time to get back to full fitness so we need midfielders. Also, Ojo looks like he can play right back.

Having retained so many of last seasons squad you’d have to think we won’t be signing many players unless players leave.  I’d suggest we’re likely to see how things go then wheel ‘n’ deal again in Jan.

For me we need 2 more strikers, the goalkeeping situation is still an interesting one, perhaps add another CH, look for a Gibbo replacement if not Cass.  Having released Hurst and Amoo you could also say we maybe another wide player if we want to be more flexible with formations.

Jay Spearing back at Liverpool as full time under 18s coach. At 33 I thought he had more to offer in league 2 but maybe his injury at the end of last season cut his career short.

Agreed our midfield now appears to be well stocked, we all saw last season how injuries seriously depleted us in that area of the pitch. Also we have a good blend of flair and grit . With increased subs this season I'm sure rotation will be key. However with the return of the 2 young loan lads upfront and Amoo leaving it's uptop where we look lightweight numbers wise.. I'm sure this is where we will see our next signings and they could be key ones, expecting and need at least a couple.

Tranmere are bringing the age of their team down. Peter Clarke aged 40 released. And he has gone to Walsall. Spearing is likely to be earning much more as coach at Liverpool than playing for Tranmere in League 2, plus it's a job with a future.

In midfield in particular I think we need a greater balance of players who have been at League 1 level and performed well to mix with the players who have the potential to be able to play at League 1 level. That is why I think Fonso Ojo is a really good signing. Up front we need to edge up the goals scored per season by Proctor and Wilson - maybe simply by staying fit. Garrity is a major goal scorer behind them and I think we need some talented young players on loan to come in as backup. Or maybe a top level striker at the end of their career who can appear from the bench for 20 mins in tight games. Lee Hughes type. I'm not sure we need to replace Gibbo because Worrall and Cass can play wing back. Frankly I think Cass is a step up from Gibbo already. Gibbo couldn't do what Worrall does because he didn't have the dribbling skills.

When did Worrall acquire dribbling skills?

When did Worrall acquire dribbling skills?

He's not a stop the ball and do a defender like Messi. Actually although he's got an engine he doesn't have the start up speed to threaten in behind like that. But he has really good ability with close control and body shape that results in him facing the right way in any situation plus threatening a dinked pass. He is able to play in a pattern with others that results in him finding space and being able to cross. And he can do this high up the pitch including getting to the goal line. Gibbo was a bit like the straight man in a comedy act playing with Worrall who worked with him to engineer the crossing position. But ultimately Worrall is obviously a much higher level ability player attacking wise.

Still a few signings to be made in my view. Overall I think our squad lacks pace. I have concerns that our attacking threat is so reliant on getting our wingbacks up the pitch. Pace up top could make other teams sit deeper. Some creative cover for TC would be great too.

Signings we have to make in my view:

1. GK (first 11): I'd love a dominant number one. Yes i know this is harsh on stone.

2. CB (squad player): I'd be looking for a Martin upgrade. Maybe a similar style player but with a bit more pace.

3. RWB (first 11): Think we do need a specialist rwb. No idea what robinson offers, but RWB it's not cass, ojo's or worrals natural position and i think it'll be a problem in lg1.

4. AM/FW (capable of first 11): With TC injured I worry about our attacking creativity from midfield. I also don't think we have natural cover for wilson. So an attacking player that can play in those pockets of space and has a bit of skill. Yes garrity can play AM but he's more the type of player to arrive late in the box for a cut back or hound a goal through force of will. We need more types of goals in our squad and a creative player could do that.

5. FW (first 11): I think we will still be managing proctors game time. I'd love a strong and pacey striker.

Other than that i would like to see more loans from Prem teams in the following categories:

- 20 year+ players

- Last year of contract

If a prem loan player is ever going to make their first team squad in this age bracket then they will being loaned to championship teams. There is a good opportunity to repeat what we did with Cass and have good footballing players on loan that we could realistically sign. It's a good model to follow until our own youth team starts producing better players.

I agree with much of this. Dominant keeper for me. Martin upgrade. More upfront; Harratt's pace was a big factor in our play off success imo.

Where would Worral play in the system if not wing back?

If we play 433 Worall is one of the three in the front line because he can play wide comfortably and he has the engine to close down from the front. He also gets in my 442 team. The issue I have with Worrall, given injuries to others last season, was he looked drained at the end of the regular season because he had been asked to do too much.

With those formations, he's a shoo in.

But we mostly played 3-5-2, and there was so much debate about this sacrificing one of our best assets.

I don't see that changing.

Do you?

Maybe not realistic (either due to out of our range, availability or recently moved) but these would have been my choices for these roles you’ve suggested:

1. GK - Vlaclav Hladky - Ipswich. Looked the real deal for Salford, hasn’t really featured for Ipswich since the move.

2. CB - Would have been Che Dunkley but has moved to Shrews this week.

3. RWB - Would have been Kane Wilson, but had many suitors and don’t see us rivalling the wages of a Bristol City in the Championship.

4. AM - Azeez - Villa (loan). Looked absolute mustard for Newport last season. Maybe Villa fancy sending him for a stint in a higher league this season.

5. FW - Tyler Walker - Coventry. Had a poor last season on loan at Pompey, but he’s pacey and showed when with us previous he has an eye for goal. Has been told he’s got a clean slate at Cov but I can’t see him making the squad so could be an option later on in the window.
