RCB was a problem position. Neither Smith or Gibbo were natural and it was inhibiting their strengths. Cass excels in getting the ball up the field and loved an underlap. Leaves us with:

Cass Smith Hall

Gibbo Garrity Walker Conlon Benning

Wilson Proctor

Honestly I reckon that stays up comfortably. Add a bit of magic up top and at wing-back and...

This. It was very noticeable when smith had to fill in there at RCB that we weren’t getting the best out of Worrall or as effective on that side of the pitch as a pairing. We were much better with Smith being in the centre where he was able to play to his strengths.

If Cass can improve his defending 10%, and no reason to think he can't as he is a young lad, a back three of Cass Smithy Hall is top half L1 level for me.

Yep Cass is the right age as well, plenty of developing to do and 2 wide centre halves who can play is a must… Which Cass and Hall are good at.

Newcastle obviously saw something in him/expected him to improve to offer him another contract .

I may be looking to deep into this but the timing of this is quite machiavellian so kudos to the recruitment team - again!  The overlap of Cass’ and Gibbons’ skill sets certainly now weakens Gibbo’s agent’s position they might have had in next Tuesday’s negotiations when it comes to laying it on thick about him being the best RCB at the club (even though it might not be his preferred position).

A freak injury in late January saw Cass’ season cut short, but he remained close to the first team, meeting up with them during our away trip to Hartlepool United and also assisting with opposition scouting roles.

“During his recovery he has been the ultimate professional and has worked hard to make sure he will be back as soon as possible, that’s all you can ask for, he’s a good lad and I can’t wait to get working with him during pre-season.”

"There was a number of clubs in for his signature and it's testament to the atmosphere around the club that has been built by the manager and the staff that Lewis chose to continue his career with us."

What a lad.

Such a shame he got that injury, but he must have enjoyed his time here so it's great we've signed him on a permanent deal! Welcome back Lewis!!!

Sure, I understand that, but will still keep an eye how he does, as I reckon he's got a lot about him that could see him go places--always difficult when a striker is so young, but I'd put money on him making a name for himself.

I think you're right - he certainly grew in stature with us!

Q) There were other clubs who wanted you, why did you come to Vale?
A) The ambition. Right direction, no stopping it. Tight knit from top to bottom. First choice was to come back to Vale.

As with Harratt and Edmondson, he sounds a really nice young man who appreciated how he was treated!

Not one of the doommongerers, and it’s a great signing, but why would he turn down a contract with NUFC to join Port Vale.

Because U23 football is crap and in reality he probably realises that he isn’t going to get a crack at Newcastles first team either.

Cos we're massive! Like, Swindon big. 💪

But yeah, actually, club he enjoyed being at and where he was treated well, playing time at full level rather than U23, and perhaps he was uneasy about wearing the Saudi green and white cos he's a decent lad?

Nah, I just know a lot of the lads and people around the club to speak to through doing some work now and again there and I know people that work there too.  Got a lot of time for the local lads especially, it’s no secret that Smith and Gibbo are my favourite players.

So Gibbo's not signing then.
