Summer transfer targets/rumours, retained list etc

Talking of Dan Jones's long throws, would like to see us try and improve our record on set plays and dead balls. I stand to be corrected but without Conlon in the squad we got very little from them. Always feel a goals is far more likely for the opposition from their corners than for us from ours. Thought Benning and Hussey were supposed to be great at these but been quite disappointed so far.

For me, we have that in Jones. His long passing and long throw also give the team a point of difference if he is used.
I suspect I will get some replies saying he isn't up to L1 standard but I'm talking about him being a back-up to Hall NOT first-choice.
I thought he was decent at the start of the season but unsurprisingly hasn't had a look-in since Hall came in (and also due to injury). Jones also looks to be a good character to have around the squad which the management puts a lot of emphasis on.
Jones is under contract so unless the feeling is he really isn't up to it, it would make sense to keep him for the next season, in my view.
To be honest I'd forgot all about Jones. I agree. Just needs to get fit

The salary caps (2.5mil an 1.5 mil for L1 and L2 respectively) were abandoned in Feb last year following a legal appeal from the PFA.  So I believe clubs can pay what they think they can afford - or not if you’re Derby, Reading, Swindon etc.

Nothing in place yet but EFL (see below) are looking at bringing in a new cap based on income (wage bill <70% of income) as early as this Summer but phased over 3 years along with ‘fairer’ financing between the Prem and Championship - getting rid of parachute payments etc.  So in the meantime I’d imagine some clubs (Stockport?) may still want to gamble on paying inflated salaries irrespective of their current league status to get as far up the pyramid as possible before restrictions come in.

If we just recruit smartly within our budget, without throwing money around, we will be fine as other clubs will chase the Championship dream, fail, and come into financial hardship, forcing them to sell their best players and recruit on the cheap.

I would really hope our current squad embrace what we have and what they have achieved TOGETHER ! One or two prima donnas do not alway make a team ! Unfortunately heads can be turned by the lure of money, but I hope the bulk of our squad stay together and achieve together.

I wouldn’t blame anyone who left, certainly wouldn’t think of them as primadonnas, it’s a short career that they need to make the most of. I’d imagine that players like Garrity, Gibbo, Wilson, smith and hall for example would be players that other clubs would take a look at.

I know the name Danny Mayor is always one to consider as he’s a northern lad. However he’s under contract at PAFC. There are 18 players under contract, 3 whom they have the option to extend their contracts and have offered 1 player a new contract having only released 1 player. Can’t imagine there’ll be much dealing in the transfer market as they have a squad. Perhaps they believe consistency is the answer.

All about opinions..I think our midfield as it stands ( even assuming conlon and walker get fit) is way below what’s required. Just not athletic enough. Defo think we need a goalkeeper…. But the best we can afford. Defence is too slow on the turn and we only have Wilson as a forward with potential for 10 goals as proctors never fit.
A lot of changes needed for me.

I can understand what you say, depends largely on whether we are aiming for a top half/ play offs finish. I've heard a few rumours of players who are leaving, so can only assume this has been planned for in the "process" so to speak.

They threw big money on a 20 goal a season man (Mullin) and ended up with nowt.

There's a cautionary tale in there if our persuit of Telford is true

I reckon there is a big difference between the Wrexham story of giving old players HUGE sums to retire on and if we brought Telford to our dressing room, set up and culture.
