Let’s be clear, you can sign as many players as you like for your squad but a settled team is the key.  Not checked the stats but I’d bet Bristol Rovers, Northampton et al will have had far fewer disruptions than ourselves.  Feel free to correct me, but most teams will have had their blips when key players have gone missing, Swindon a good example.

no teams have had more long-term injuries to key players than us. the settled team is spot on. If they can't play more than 30 then don't sign them up, and when you get stuck with them, get rid of them asap. being settled is absolutely key to getting promotion.

I suppose looking back on the season! To cagey at the start missed the opportunity to bag a few points, the goalkeeping has cost a few points plus gifted our rivals a few. Added a few aberrations where we have given away a few games. Really could have walked this league ! Hope we have learned as a club and maybe move on and up.

"I get that I come across as this miserable moaning cynic who is never satisfied, but to be honest folks, I'm never going to be really satisfied with League 2 football; not when Bournemouth return to the Premier League, Luton challenge for the Championship playoffs, Burton, Fleetwood, Accrington, and Morecambe ply their football in a division above us, a team from 'Nailsworth' get promoted ahead of us. These are all clubs that have absolutely nothing over us in terms of revenue, fanbase, or infrastructure - they just happened to have had some success, which for some reason we're quite satisfied to chase like a mirage, always in sight but never getting there. I don't think it's a God-given right, I just can't work out why Accrington and Morecambe can do more than we can."

Joe B, I agree with a lot of this post. It is frustrating, and I think a lot of fans are impatient to get back amongst the bigger clubs.  I share that impatience.  I think better days are coming - I would be seriously worried if (and I hope it is an if) we don't go up this season, and then next season isn't an improvement. I just think a lot of the foundations are in place around the club, especially now we are free from repaying the former owner. It seems to me there are enough expert eyes on what we need to do to push on from here next season to get the job done.  I agree given the history of this club, we should never be satisfied with League Two football.   I think it is going to be a very interesting summer recruitment wise, regardless of whether we bomb out at the last or scrape up through the playoffs.

Forest Green got 5 in with 1 extra in January. Oldham got 18.

This place was (correctly) full of 'give them time' posts when we went 4 without a win at the start of the season. 9 points dropped, how we could do with just a few of those now.

Many, especially on Radio Joke, we predicting a relegation fight then

We are where we are. Be honest I've joined in with the oh what about Sutton, Oldham, Rochdale but in the clear light of day every team has ' what ifs ' .

I can remember 2 examples off the top of my head. Bristol rovers were 1 up away to 9 man Salford and conceded a last minute goal. Northampton had the incorrect ' ghost goal ' given to FGR that cost them 2 points.

Every team has tales of woe.

But the tale of woe that does hurt is Conlon missing half a season,  Proctor and Wilson maybe 25 games between them. Gibbo half a season.

4 absolutely crucial players .

But if we can get that point or Sutton fail to win then the play offs are a toss of a coin. An off day, a refereeing nightmare ( Roger Milford ) , we aren't out of it yet. I'm trying to keep faith that we'll eke out a result.

I know you're talking more on this weekend's game here - but for a wider point on the play offs, too, see Northampton 2020. Went into the POs ahead of Vale on PPG, in average form, comfortably beaten in the first leg by a much better Cheltenham side: 0-2. Turn up at the away leg 4 days later, Cobblers win 0-3. They then went to Wembley and completely dismantled Exeter: 4-0. (In the long run, for this example, you could argue Cheltenham and Exeter have come off better, so there is another conclusion to draw here - but that's immeasurable.)

It can, does and has happened when teams who just look down and out turn up out of nowhere in a PO situation. Almost like a complete reset of the season. No pressure in terms of points or other team's results.

I'm not saying Vale will do it, or even make the POs at this stage, I don't really know what I think after the last 3 games tbh, but like you say to think we are 'out of it' is utter rubbish.

Amen to that - and frankly, at this stage what's the point of thinking any other way?
