I’ve seen people questioning this record based on Burslem Port Vale’s liquidation in 1907 and the subsequent renaming of Cobridge Church to Port Vale.

What’s the official line?

Taken to be continuous with a 1876 on the badge?  Would make Arsenal the only League team we have not played since we re-joined the League in 1919.  Is it the same Arsenal that played at Woolwich?

If Rotherham beat Sutton today they will become the ninth team to win the EFL Trophy twice Along with Birmingham,Blackpool,Carlisle,Port Vale,Stoke,Swansea and Wigan.Bristol City are the only team to win it three times.

They will also carry on the recent tradition of having beaten Vale on the way to winning the trophy.  Sunderland last season and Salford the season (day) before!

Swansea knocked us (the holders) out in 94 and went on to win the trophy. We knocked the holders out in 93 (can’t remember who) on our way to winning it. We also did the same in 2001.

A sort of hollow achievement. Would rather we were not spending so many years beating non clubs in league 2. One reason we have done it and others have not is because apart from Bradford, no other club with a stronger league history has sunk so low for so long. Except maybe the ex league clubs like Notts County that fell out of the league..

Blackpool, Reading, Barnsley, Huddersfield, Brentford?

Blackpool, Reading, Barnsley, Huddersfield and Brentford have all had premier league football. Should any of them fall into the 4th tier in recent years, they too could claim the record. Blackpool had the most recent experience of it from that lot over the past decade.

The last time most of those clubs were right at the bottom of the football league we had either re-election or only one promotion place to conference meaning there were fewer teams to beat to get that record as FL membership would tend to stay static.
