On the Saturday, after Colchester, I was fuming. As was everyone else. It was truly awful. Many others felt the same.

I’m not saying it was a rational or sensible view, but certainly after that game I failed to see the improvement seen in the last two coming.

Very few fans at the time were singing his praises then and it is incredible to see such a swing in views after two wins.

If every you feel that it’s unfair that people call you overly negative always think back to this fact…

You wanted a man who is stepping in to help the club with no notice in the most tragic of circumstances to lose his job because we lost and performances weren’t up to scratch.

I don’t think there’s been a swing in views at all.  The vast majority can see what the reality is, that every team in this league has a few bad games in them.  Injuries form, heavier pitches etc are all things outside of the control of the management/coaching team.  Admittedly many of us felt that the formation/personnel wasn’t helping us to play with any style, or even to win many games, but I would counter that to some extent by saying that the players themselves looked like they were, shall we say, jaded.  Some obviously are, Hussey for one, clearly playing when not fully fit.

Irrespective of this, AC has had to pick up the mantle at a moments notice and work in the most tragic of circumstances.  He’s having to manage the team whilst at the same time being respectful to the position of the actual manager of the team.  Irrespective of any results he’s conducting himself impeccably.  There’s absolutely nothing wrong with recognising and lauding this, which I think is the reason for this thread.

Correct. The original purpose of the post was to praise the dignity and professionalism of Andy Crosby in taking on so much in difficult circumstances - it wasn't actually to do with the results. 👍

I don’t think it is unfair. Negative performances deserve criticism.
I always praise the club when we get things right and do well, loved last night but the previous few weeks stank.

My beef is that we have a lot of bleeding hearts on here when a few weeks ago there were people wanting him gone, thinking he wasn’t up to it and various other things.

The evidence is all there. Those people know who they are.

I understand your position… you have made it very clear.

Its abhorrent in my view given what’s happening… but you do you.

I think it's to Crosbys immense credit how he has handled himself during what have been horrible circumstances. It's certainly true to say that the evidence was there that the 3-4-3 wasn't working but maybe it needed the full week off which we had prior to Crawley for them to properly analyse things. Who knows maybe in the background Flitcroft or even DC has quietly given him a little guidance on going back to the 3-5-2. Either way they've got it right now and it's working.

You can also see the players have high respect for him as all of them are clearly buying in and giving their all for him. Often with caretaker managers that isn't the case after the first initial couple of games.

But this isn't about performances

This is purely about the character of the man, his professionalism and willingness to take on extra work in immensely difficult circumstances.

None of those things are to do with performances and yet you've skewed this thread into talking about performance when there are match threads to do exactly that.

This isn't that thread.

By all means, the ability of the man to do the job are and should be debated in the match threads but this is about character NOT ability...

Just been reading up on Andy Crosby's career.

Has vast experience and success as assistant to Nigel Adkins.

How the hell did we get him?

He has such a calm, respectful and measured manner.

It's really no surprise that he's handling things so well.

Just stumbled across a video on youtube of some young lad who runs a matchday vlog sort of thing interviewing AC after the game. Came across extremely well.

It would have been more than understandable for the season to fall apart after losing DC to a tragedy. Also, to a 10,000x times lesser extent obviously, with the mental injury record and then the enforced COVID break.

For it to be Andy Crosby as our 2IC taking over - absolutely phenomenal recruitment Vale.

Going up this season would be incredibly special given the circumstances.

Huge credit most go to Crosby for the last month. He really should get the manager of the month accolade. I thought we looked rudderless after DC went on compassionate leave, it rather felt like Crosby was just keeping us ticking along for a few games  going through the motions and we were crying out for a leader, but something changed

His interviews sound different, our play is different, our mentality and approach to games is different. We look like we have a really strong unity amongst the management and whole squad. You could see that at the end of yesterdays game. I believe it’s down to leadership he is now showing rather than being a caretaker.

I really can’t praise him enough in the turnaround we have witnessed during the past month.

With 3 home games and 5 away left to play the mental side is going to play a massive part in success or failure and Crosby has demonstrated he’s definitely up to the task.

We need a song for Crosby.

Brilliant video!! Love the interviewers enthusiasm and he’s a very impressive young man!

I think you're wrong. Most fans seemed to be of the opinion...as we are now...that he'd just stepped up to take on a role he didn't necessarily want, in the most traumatic of times, and should be given time to adjust. That game wasn't wholly his fault - so many players were not on their game either.

Spot on. This forum is absolutely not representative of the fan base at large. A very small minority of Vale fans post regularly on this forum. An even smaller minority post irregularly. The smallest (but loudest) minority post only negative opinions generally only after a defeat or goal conceded. Yet, for some unknown reason, those with largely negative posts seem to think that the majority of fans agree with them.
