This. Add the long covid break too that seemed to halt our momentum as well. There’s no way you can predict that Conlon would do his Achilles or that Gibbo would get that freak injury at Harrogate. Both contenders for player of the season IMO. But what those 2 injuries have shown is that we dont have the same quality replacements to come in and do what they do. Throw in the fact that the influence of the manager has been lost too and it’s no wonder we’re struggling. But the only people who can get us back on track are the other 20+ players in the squad. They have to step up now and hide behind the excuse of missing our 2 best players and the manager as we enter the last quarter of the season.

Not so long ago I’m sure our January window was being hailed as good business. A few iffy performances later and it’s being looked at  as a bad one.

Also interesting to see the calls for a replacement (or temporary) manager to come in. This is a delicate situation and one we’ve never faced before, I’m not sure what we should do. I think that morally I’m on the side of keeping it as it is and seeing where the gaffers feelings lie come the end of the season.

Well said............

Disappointed to lose the game there's no way we deserved lose but we managed too .

Lacking a bit of quality only played well when Proctor come on Wilson a passenger

Charsley showed good energy credit to Colchester never really tried win the game but somehow did .

Worrall and Hussey for me never tried beat there man we were too negative we had enough of the ball but weren't sharp enough do anything with it .

Lacked tempo it's football I could only see one winner and that was us so disappointed that we lost didn't think we deserved too though the goal was a terrible one concede I think the goalkeeper got to be at fault for that and the player who's man it was who let there defender head it in .

A very poor goal giveaway .

Don’t sign players with questionable injury records and think a bit better about what type of players we need in January. Not rocket science.

So you won't want Gibbons being offered a new contract this season?

Sorry to answer someone else’s question but 100% I’d offer him a new deal. I trust what the club put out about the work he does behind the scenes and how his hamstring from last season isn’t an issue (I believe it was the other one he tweaked slightly in January). I also recognise that the injury he got the other night is something that can happen at any time in a game and is just unlucky. Crosby has said tonight that his studs got caught in the turf as he went over, no player can prepare for that happening.

See response below. To be honest, I don’t even know why I’m debating with you. We clearly so things differently. You are happy to accept mediocrity this season because ‘the garden is rosy’ off the pitch and success is bound to come. I get it. And I accept you are more patient than me. To be honest, as I’ve put elsewhere, I am a bit frustrated at repeating the same mistakes game after game, season after season and I felt we’d got the building blocks in place to have a proper go at this year. But the last dozen or so games (and yes, O know about off the field stuff etc) we have not have a go. We have basically been boring and defensive and yes, that does rankle with me.

Read PV1973's post above, it might just put things in perspective for you.

It isn't just Conlon BB it's Jake Taylor also, John Askey would most likely have got Vale into the play-offs in 2019/20 with a midfield of Taylor/Juke Joyce/Conlon or Burgess. Cruel to be robbed of both Conlon and Tyalor at the same time.

Yep, can't disagree, these things happen.

But he's got a patchy injury history so we're better off getting rid according to the Biddulph bible.

I didn’t say I wouldn’t, I’m no physio and don’t know what injuries he’s got. But the point is we are a L2 club and simply cannot afford to offer big deals to players who spend more time on the treatment table than they do the pitch.

Since our dizzy heights of second we lost both strikers, our midfield general, our best attacking full back and now the boss himself. You cannot legislate for such appalling bad luck, nor replace four quality players with someone else’s squad players. The momentum was taken out of our play and we have failed to reignite. Add to this losing  Politic’s game changing appearances, we are at best a mid table team. Mathematically we may still be able to have a chance of the play-offs but we are not the same team that got us where we are.

Absolutely bang on. Some things you just cannot legislate for & bad luck is one of them. I do believe you make your own luck but sometimes you just have to stick your hands up & say... wow, it's really not meant to be.

I genuinely believe that had we been blessed with so much as an ounce of good fortune this season, we'd have been a top 3 side. To list a few...

Wilson injury when hitting top form... v Bradford... who somehow kept 11 men on the pitch despite the most blatant 2nd yellow you will ever see in a football match. (Bloke gets subbed half time)

Proctor injury as he's starting to bag goals & play really well. Not just once, but twice. Second injury on his first match back after coming on as a sub, completely different injury to the first.

Our captain & most creative player, Conlon, out for the season. In all likelihood, lads been injured since start of December & soldiered on for a few games until it became unplayable.

Gibbo... in & out. Injury prone unfortunately.

Cass, was a massive player for our formation & style of play. Season ending injury in freak training accident. Back to Castle.

Politic. Season long loan. Lost him in Jan. To an Italian side pushing for Serie A... I mean... come on. Unbelievable player at L2 level. Game changer.

We've thrown some points away & you can't put that down to bad luck as such but Sutton away... Timing of Procs injury & then the referees decision to give Sutton a free kick when a Vale player has been taken out on halfway line. Goes in the box, goal.

Goalkeepers... Cov... nuts... cost us opening day of the season & then wrecked the game v Swindon just as he seemed to be finding some form. Stone, average. Holy, worse than average. Again not so much bad luck, but to hire 3 x keepers, non of which have done well for us, is really poor. A steady Eddie this season who just turned up every game would've seen us bag atleast 10+ points extra so far.

Referees, could list loads of examples. No luck whatsoever. We're one of only 4 clubs in the whole 92 who haven't had a penalty all season.

Finally, & the one which outweighs all the others combined... DC. To lose your manager at such a key time in the season has been massive. Thoughts & prayers with DC & his family still, & I hope he takes as long as he needs. Just hope we see him again in the Vale dugout, but only if/when he is ready himself.

I'm honestly at the point now where I hope we can have a solid end to the season & build some optimism for next season. That might sound dramatic & maybe it is a touch, but I just don't think it's meant to be this year for us. The sun has not shined on us & when it's rained, it's poured. It's a terrible league, nothing in it yet again. It's just not our year.

Hope we can get to the summer, add some fresh faces where required, hold on to our better players & give it a go again next year... with some long, long, long, overdue fortune sprinkled in.

You’re on a roll tonight! Can you find me the quote where I said “we shouldn’t offer Gibbo a new deal”….???

So you're saying that you would despite his injury record and despite saying that we shouldn't sign players with injury records like his? Make your mind up

Let’s get rid then is what you’re saying.  But the club (and potential suitors) will look at the reasons how players missed games and the history behind those injuries and I think in gibbos case that someone would take a chance if we did get rid. For example you could say that missing most of last season was down to being overloaded when he came back, with the full extent of the injury not being sorted because we needed him back at an important time. The recovery from that wiped out the first month of this season. He then played 4 months with no issues that we know about until that tweak early on at Orient. Supposedly his other leg too. Again being early in the game was that down to the warm up? Something else the club would have looked at. Now he’s had a freak injury through studs getting caught in the turf, that’s something that could happen to any player and you can’t condition yourself for that happening. IMO if we don’t offer him a deal I think he will get picked up by another club. I still think he has a part to play for us and I wouldn’t ditch him.
