We have to do all we can to support Ukraine in this great struggle. Are their  any demonstrations of support scheduled locally?

There was a massive one in Manchester last Saturday. Good to see so many people supporting Ukraine and saw many Ukrainian flags around

I can imagine more will pop up in major cities.

There's a group from Edinburgh who are heading to Poland and asking the public for donations and food/cleaning products for the people at the Poland/Ukrainan border.

Hanley Town have tweeted this. Hope the Vale get something similar sorted for the next home game.

Agie & Katie's restaurant in town are collecting to send out to Poland, I'm taking a boot load up to them tomorrow.

Would be nice to have a wider audience and for the Vale to do something.

It's all bluster as usual by the Tories.

You're way behind the curve with that summary.  The heaviest ever financial sanctions have now been enacted and one of the more pleasing aspects for me, has been the collective will and working together of virtually every European country towards this aim. The UK government, together with its own sanctions, has quite rightly,  been working in lockstep alongside countries around the world.  The UK was one of the first to suggest taking Russia out of the SWIFT international payments system and had to wait for other countries to agree to this pretty drastic action which of course, has now happened.

To suggest that nothing is being done, is clearly just ridiculous!

Has the UK put any proper sanctions in place yet or have they just talked a good game?

Come on--read the news and keep up for goodness sake--massive financial & sport-related sanctions have been enacted.  Ask the Russian people queuing to get access to their money, the value of which, has tumbled to an all-time low.  Ask the Russian cargo ships that will now not be allowed to dock in the UK, USA, Australia and the whole of the EU.  Ask the Russian airlines that will now not be allowed to land anywhere in the UK & EU.  And you ask if anything has been done--unbelievable!

Of course lots have been done, which will affect innocent people as well. But Putin and his mates have moved their yachts out of the way and their assets are hidden behind shell companies and tax havens.  Regime change is the only way, 20 years in power is too long. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Most countries limit presidents to 2 terms for very good reasons learnt in the past.

Not totally clear on your argument here.  Are you suggesting that Russia limits its president to two terms or, are you suggesting that a UK government shouldn't do more than two consecutive terms?

Either way, I suspect you've got no chance.  Dictatorships aren't generally given to acts of largesse, democratic principles and rationale (especially in the case of Putin!) and if you're referring to this country, we have a long-established democracy where, despite all its faults, a system that allows the people to choose their own government every few years.

They’re getting there slowly.

Maybe the Conservatives are worried about alienating all their Russian donors?

You're labouring under a misconception, as many do in fairness, about the difference between 'dirty' money and legal donations to political parties.

Thankfully, it's gone beyond that already, as the government has now brought forward a finance bill that will include a property register to stop oligarchs hiding their dirty cash. There's a difference between this 'dirty' money and party donations.  Under the proposed new legislation, crime agencies will be able to target trusts & shell companies as well as individuals.  The Treasury will also be able to impose fines more easily on British companies who try to dodge sanctions already introduced.  In a further separate white paper being published today, Companies House will have greater powers to alert law enforcers about any breaches of failure to declare ownership of properties & companies.

Under current legislation, donors (to any political party) have to be resident in the UK and all such donations have to be legally declared--so pretty transparent really--that's why we know about donations to the Labour & Liberal Democrat parties as well as the Tories. I, for one, applaud the government for taking these actions.  It's only a pity that this and previous administrations (both Tory & Labour) didn't do it sooner!

It was a world wide statement, Russia had the limit until Putin changed it, the US has a 2 term limit as do other countries. Power corrupts if there are not controls on power.

the Russian airlines have 777 civil airliners of which 515 are leased, and the leasing companies have cancelled the contracts... also a disturbing item, especially considering putin's position he unexpectedly finds himself in...

The European Union has decided to provide Ukraine with 70 Russian-made fighter planes to help the country’s defence against invading Russian troops.

In a statement on Facebook, the Air Force Command of Ukraine’s armed forces said the country will get 16 MiG-29 and 14 Su-25 planes from Bulgaria, 28 Mig-29 planes from Poland and another 12 MiG-29 jets from Slovakia.

A Ukrainian government official told Politico magazine that Ukrainian pilots had reached Poland to begin the process of taking control of the planes.

Can't disagree with that, but Putin played the system for years, swapping roles between prime minister & president until he got bored (or enough sychophants around him) to be able change the system in his favour to become lifelong president or, in his case, as he probably sees himself, the new Tsar!

A similar situation prevails in China of couse, as President Xi has become life-long leader.  As I mentioned in my previous post, I'd much prefer to live in a democracy (however flawed) than under a dictatorship.
