Match Thread: Port Vale v Stevenage

I'll blow my own trumpet here, think it was me and V593 who both predicted Walker would play a big part in the second half of the season.  Granted I didn't think it would be in defence !!

More than adequate there and because Smith is purely a defender and in the main treats the ball like a hot potato then Walker is proving a decent partner as opposed to Martin,  Martin was a touch unlucky to fall ill recently and lose his place but as with Smith isn't great on the ball.

Walker worryingly is always getting a yellow though and had 88 minutes today to see out .

Nothing much to say about the game apart from 2-0 is all that matters.

Frustrating to see us ponderous, sluggish and going backwards at times. But booing , deary me .

The players are doing fantastic given the terrible circumstances and close knit club we have become.  They wouldn't be human if they weren't affected.

I think we have to give leeway for that.

I'll be at Harrogate and Colchester hoping for a minimum of 4 before we prepare for the invasion of Crawley fans the week after .

Well done boys, was bored and cold but so what,  you did the business.

Build up too slow, everything we do is in front of opposition. Pett slows us down at every opportunity. 3 up top looks attacking on paper but we just end up with all 3 playing with their backs to goal. Play 1 off proctor and put another body in midfield. We're hard to beat but need to vastly improve going forwards if we're going to go up via playoffs.

Pett is tidy but plays too safe and simple for me. He's never poor but I'm often left with a feeling that he has it in him to be offering more, certainly going forward.

I suppose a lot of his good work comes off the ball.

The more I watch Tom Pett the more I think of Ray Wilkins and I think it was Ron Atkinson that used to call him - "The Crab" - For me He is excellent on the ball - just watch him wrong foot and weave through players, sending them one way then another, but, nearly always sideways - but if that his his role, that is his role, and for me he plays it exceptionally, but unfortunately to the detriment sometimes of the quick forwards ball. He has been the same all season, but with Conlon missing, we are just missing that killer through ball, often to a marauding wing back

Just hope that these dropped points in last minutes Dosent come back to haunt us. Two points per game clearly the target but we should still be beating the likes of Rochdale. Overall as you say makes good reading especially as I don’t think we have played well for some time

Wonder if Northampton thought the same

Possibly naive of me, but I'm wondering whether we are deliberately conserving energy as there are so many games.

Why bust a gut at 2-0, when there's another game on Tuesday night?

Still a third of the season left, all to be played in a 10 week spell.

Needs careful management.

Good point that.

We need to also remember Gibbo and Proctor are being gradually brought back into the fold. Clearly neither are fully at it though you would think Gibbo in particular has never been away .

It's all about the win , I don't think we'll see much scintillating stuff any more.  Its all about 3 points.

That’s exactly how I saw it… I never felt nervous today. Professional result.

Not a great performance second half but overall very professional I thought, specially defensively. Yes they were poor, but I think defensively we made them look like that. Back 3 looked very assured again.

It puts the draw to bed and was a positive sign of getting over it quickly.

Disagree completely with people on here that Wilson had a bad game, thought again it was very selfless and energetic performance - just needs a goal.

Disappointing for Worrall, he has been one of our best players for the past few seasons and an assist machine, so to see him go off like that was horrible to see. I recon that could be an end of the season job. Still, I'll always expect Beech to get a dig in about form (during the game behind his laptop in Belgium), regardless of that because that's the nature of some of our fans. Whatever his form has been the past few games, he will be missed.

Make the 3 points count again on Tuesday and keep the unbeaten run going, over to some of our signings to make the difference squad wise - Cooper, Charsley, Jones, Benning? Hurst? Still in good shape for the run in.

Wilson appears to be this month's scapegoat...despite the fact that in early season, he wasn't hitting many goals but most people seemed to recognise his importance to our play - how quickly they choose to forget!...we even had a fans' poll on was he an asset to our team, FFS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well we've won but that is not a promotion team performance by a long long way.

If the 3 points help us to get promotion then of course it is!  There's been many comments about not caring how ugly the win, as long as it's a win - that still holds true!
